I will be 22 weeks tomorrow. I went for my level 2 ultrasound today. We have known we were having twins since 9 weeks and 3 days. Every ultrasound and doctor that we have seen as said ONE PLACENTA. Now the one i saw today said there might be 2?! There has never been anything separating the twins other than a very thin membrane that they always take a while to find when i go for my ultrasound. I thought with 2 placentas there is a big gray area in between the two babies? and every ultrasound i have had there was no gray areas between the 2 babies. She showed me on the screen but it was around the babies but nothing between them it didn't look like two to me. Has anyone had this happen to them because i am really confused now. I am having two girls so its not like there is a sign that there were 2 placentas.

It could be a fused placenta that looks like one. I know when I was pregnant with the boys they always dais 1 placenta as well, but one technician said it could be two fused together.

I was told it has something to do with the way the membrane comes into the placenta. If it looks like a Y it's probably 2 fused and if it's more like a T it's more than likely 1.

I also had 2 fused placentas. But, I was closely monitored so we always knew there were 2 placentas. At birth is when it appeared to only be one, b/c they came out together and had fused. My girls are identical.

That is what I was told too. That's how my Doctor determined that I have 1 and not 2 fused together...

We were told our girls had one placenta the entire time. Even placental analysis after birth said it was 1. But they are definitely frat, so it must have fused SUPER early. There was never any indication that there were 2 placentas but one is a brunette and one is a redhead, so definitely not ID.

Go with your earlier ultrasound. It becomes impossible to tell the later you check. Earlier is best. If they were in ONE black hole, there is one placenta.

Same thing happened to me...one u/s technician said she thought there were two placentas. Our sonograms all showed a very thin membrane between the babies and pathology confirmed there was only one placenta. We also had an u/s performed by a genetics department and they determined there was one placenta.

I would say, go with the early u/s as a pp stated. Here's a good article on the subject if you would like to read it: Determining Chorionicity and Amnionicity

    Congratulations and best of luck!

I was told the entire pregnancy with our 1st set by both u/s technicians and dr's alike that our boys were 99% ID due to 1 placenta, hairline thinness of membrane, growth habits, etc. So, we told everyone we were expecting ID boys. They came out not looking too much aike and as they grew it was obvious there were definitely 2 placentas at one point due to the fact one little boy has bright red hair and blue eyes and the other blond with green eyes! LOL! When the placenta was examined after birth we later went back and read in the records that it stated "very early fushion....fushion sight almost undectable".

We discovered our 2nd set at 21 wks, alot later than we did our 1st set, and they told us very thin membrane, etc, etc. But by 21 wks it's going to be thin anyway due to babies being big!! There is also "1 placenta" this time around but I am quite certain they just fused as the other did. So, we are counting on another set of frat boys that just have a fused placenta.

We didn't find twins until 22 weeks. We were also told one placenta. Even the peri had a hard time finding the dividing membrane. Ours were born looking very similar, but we knew within hours that they were frat. They have different blood types, so we know without a doubt.
