i am just checking to see if anyone has been given a prescription for albuterol for premature contractions? i was given a script last night for it since i have been having slight contractions and pretty bad back ache for the past two weeks. I am at 31.2 weeks and have dilated to 1 cm. i worry about the side effects and if i will be able to work if i take this drug...

    Which form of albuterol?

I have NEVER heard this used for contractions? I take albuterol several times daily for asthma to open up my airways. My son was just on the liquid for pneumonia to help with his breathing and clear up his lungs. NEVER heard of it for contractions??

ETA: I did find this link when I googled

that is the article i found too when i searched for it on the internet. my script was written for Ventolin and the bottle i got says Albuterol sulfate 2 mg is being substituted for the ventolin... i am to take one tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed for contractions.

While searching the net I see that it says it "may inhibit uterine contractions" but when I click on the link there's no mention of it in the info on the drug. I did see a few sites that said HIGH DOSES of IV albuterol may stop contractions.

If you are only concerned with if the drug will harm you or the babies In my opinion it will not. I was on high doses of albuterol during my twin pregnancy b/c of my asthma and they boys were fine. I am currently still taking albuterol for my asthma this pregnancy ( inhaled form) every 4-6 hours same as with the twins so Im sure this baby will be fine too. From what I know its a drug used to dialate you airways when they are closing dues to Asthma or COPD. If they think it might help with contractions I say give it a shot and if it does not work contact you ob?

    Good luck to you!!

Hmm....never heard of it for contractions either, but I also was using it or my asthma, it eventually stopped working when pregnant with my dd and I got switched to xopenex. But I agree I don't think it will hurt the babies at all.

    I hope it works!!

I have never heard of it used to stop contractions either. But just wanted to let you know I use it several times a day in an inhaler and sometimes the nebulizer. I have used it throughout this pregnancy and my other 3 and it is safe to use. I know it can make some people feel jittery in higher amounts but wont effect the babies. Also albuterol is just the generic form of ventolin and provental. So its the same medicine. As for working it shouldnt be a problem at all while taking the medicine it doesnt make you drowsy or anything. If anything maybe it will make you breathe easier too. Good Luck.

Also wanted to mention that I love the name you picked for your little girl. We were going to use that exact name Kennedy Rayne for our little girl. But since we are having twins we couldnt decide on two names to go together we liked Kennedy and Kensly but my SIL didint like it because my niece is McKenna and she said they were all to close. Anyway thats so funny to have picked out the exact same first and middle name.
