Our twins entered this world this past Thursday, December 4th. I was 35 weeks and 5 days.

Wednesday morning I felt some contractions and just felt a little 'odd'...can't really explain the feeling, exactly. I was scheduled for a NST at 5pm so I figured I would wait until then to be checked for dilation as I wasn't in any real pain. By 2pm the contractions changed from tightening at the top of my belly to pain radiating from my lower back and into my lower pelvic area. This was enough to make me call hubby and tell him to come pick me up. I called my doc and he said forget the NST and head to L&D. We arrived at the hospital (with our bags, just in case!) at 4pm and immediately the nurse checked me, I was dilated to 3cm so my doc said I was staying and having the babies TODAY! Within 10 minutes my doc arrived and immediately broke my water. Was just a little painful, just like having an exam, but not anything horrible. They waited for about half hour to see if my contractions would get more regular before they started the pitocin. They also placed internal monitors on Baby A hoping that they would be able to see the contractions more accurately as well. From 5pm until about 8pm everything was going smoothly with contractions getting stronger but nothing I couldn't handle without pain meds. Around that time the nurses kept asking if I was ready for my epidural but I didn't feel it was necessary. Still they convinced me to get it once I was dilated to 6cm. I was not feeling any pain at all after the epidural...and they were unimpressed with my progress that was showing on the monitors. Around 11pm they had to page the doc because they could not track Baby B's heart rate. My doc came in...it was so hilarious because he must have been napping he looked like he was half asleep and his hair was all a mess. I was trying not to laugh. He was able to find Baby B, who was still in breech position and moving around too much to keep track of her. Well, at that point I had to sit up and change position and unknowingly I removed my epidural. Within 15 minutes of sitting up I started contracting VERY painfully and no one could figure out why. After about 30 minutes of crying from the pain the nurse checked me and announced that I was still at 6cm. I was so outraged! They paged the anesthesiologist who came and gave me more med and still did not notice that my epi was not even in. Another 15 minutes and an older nurse came in because my nurse was really nervous as to why I was in so much pain. The older nurse took one look at me and said to the younger nurse, "What is happening!? Why isn't her epidural working? Did you page the doctor? Have you checked her?" The younger nurse said, "yes, she's still only at 6cm. I don't know what is wrong!" At this point I was literally screaming, unable to concentrate on my breathing and started vomiting. The older nurse then said at my next contraction she was checking me herself. When she did she announced I was at 9cm and they started moving me to the OR. I will never forget that 2 minute trip down the hallway to the OR. I was screaming like a mad woman...this was not my first labor and I was shocked at the pain. My poor husband looked like he would break down at any point he was so afraid for me. Once in the OR everything happened so fast. I was screaming that I was going to start pushing and the doc was like, "no you need to wait I need to numb you first." I think he realized I was feeling everything and that the epi did not work. He gave me two shots to numb both sides so that I could push and on my second push my son was born. It was absolutely amazing. He was so handsome with so much dark curly hair and a healthy cry. Then the doc reached in and grabbed my daughter and she was born breech...It was incredible. I was never more impressed with a doctor's skill than I was then.

My son weighed in at 5lbs 13oz and my daughter weighed in at 5lbs 7oz. They are both gorgeous and doing well! I will post pics as soon as my hubby downloads them.

Oh, and to address the epidural issue- once I was in recovery the anesthesiologist came in to tell me that I had amazed him with my birthing. He said he did not notice my epi was out until they moved me from the labor bed to the OR table. At that point it was obviously too late to do anything about it. I think he felt awful but it really wasn't his fault! You know, had my epidural NOT come out I think I would've felt barely anything...but, the pain was worth it since my labor was so darn quick. No complaints here!

:D Congratulations!!! I am sorry about the epi not working! Thanks for sharing your story! Now I will be on the look out for loose strings back there! Any NICU time for them? My babies are around your babies size already and I have been having pains like you expressed but they went away last night. I still have about a week left before the doc will let them come on their own.
