Yesterday I let Dave and Emma color with their brand new washable crayons in the playroom while I cooked dinner. When it was almost ready I told the kids to put away their crayons and go wash up for dinner. Well, due to selective hearing they missed the "pick up" part and went straight to washing. I finished dishing up the plates then grabbed the twinkies so we could sit down for dinner. After dinner I asked Dave and Emma to please clean up their crayons. About 2 minutes later Dave comes up to me and says "Mom, did you throw away our crayons? A lot of them are gone." I'm thinking "Great, Emma hid them so she could scribble all over the walls again!" (Hence WASHABLE crayons!) We searched high and low. I briefly thought about the babies getting them, but they aren't tall enough to reach the tabletop. Wrong-o! Did you know they dissolve and turn poop a lighter shade of whatever color they are? Sean seems to prefer the purple ones, and James the blue and green ones as evidenced by their technicolor poop this evening. I've seen kids poop the rainbow before, but I've never seen a diaper full of Kool-Aid purple or mottled bright blue and green poo before! :bad:

The girls eat the tips of them all the time when we go to restaurants. I haven't figured out the concept of giving a hungry kid crayons, but once they see them it is is all over.

Oh no!! I am constantly after N&M to pick up the ones they drop. I found Liam with a crazed expression on his face as a brand new crayon was making the ascent to his mouth last night. And love the technicolor poop description!!

    OMGoodness Jenny! That's insane!

BTW, is it totally ok if they eat those crayons? Dh is always completely nuts when he sees them putting them in their mouth. I mean, we obviously stop them because it's not appropriate for them to eat crayons but will it make them sick? I figure it's just wax with some food coloring so it can't be all that bad? By the sound of it, it goes in and comes back out.

:rotflmbo: Well at least it's not all over the walls . Unfortunately, I did know that crayons color the poop. It's hard to brush out of their teeth, too.

Crayons are non-toxic. The regular kind come out in chunks that look exactly the same as when they went in, but the washable ones dissolve. I think they are made of stearic acid (wax) and pigments that are usually ground up minerals. I don't know what they add to the washable kind, maybe they are a kind of really hard soap. :pardon:
