If my twins were born at 38 weeks, are they actually development wise at 4 weeks, not six? They just seem to still sleep a lot, at least 18 hours a day. They interact s little, but I thought it would be more.

    Thanks!!

My boys were 38 weeks, and I never adjusted for age. I want to say you don't unless prior to 36 weeks? Someone with preemies may chime in.

They could be going through growth spurt or any number of things. :) Enjoy the sleep while it lasts! Lol!

Yes, their adjusted age is 4 weeks. My LOs were 6 weeks early and I usually tell people their age according to DOB but when i am thinking about developmental stuff i always consider adjusted age. It is weird with preemies though because somethings are ahead (like strength to hold up head) but somethings really need to be adjusted. For example the ability to focus and also sleep patterns are largely based of developmental factors, where as, ability to hold up ones head is just muscle building.

My LOs were a lot earlier than yours but they slept A LOT at first. I don't remember exactly but I think they didn't really 'wake' up until a good month after their expected delivery date. I thought it was because they didn't get the really good restful, growing that they should have gotten in utero. That is not scientific info. just my take on it.

I had my girls at 37.1 weeks and my girls were separated at birth to different hospitals - one hospital adjusted for their age and the other didn't, so it seems to depend on who you are talking to. I adjusted for their age for developmental and sleep needs but only till about 10 months or so.

ETA: my girls seemed to sleep a lot too the first 4-6 weeks, sometimes even 8 hours at a time (which the pedi said was normal in some babies).

I didn't think they adjusted for age after 37 weeks as that is considered "full term". Ask your ped:)
