My twins were born at 33 weeks. DH and I are trying to figure out what their age really is. For example, the due date was Jan 15th (40 wks) but they were born on Nov. 26th. In regards to development, age approprate toys, etc, do we calculate months by the day they were born or their orginal due date?

I think the "rule" is to use adjusted ages with babies born before 35 weeks. So yours were 7 weeks early...minus the 7 weeks from their actual age, and that will give you their adjusted age to follow for developmental purposes. [IMG]

Our girls were also born 7 weeks early. They were due Nov. 8th and were born Sept 21st. Though the pedi charts them according to their birth date, she tells us that developmently they are compatible to children who were born early Nov.

We have found that they are on the 50th percentile for size and weight at 4 mon (Lillian 13lb8oz and Violet 13lb4oz and both 23.5 inches long), but their head size is small (it is average for children who are just 3 months). The pedi said as long as their heads are growing it is nothing to worry about. They haven't rolled over on their own yet, but are more advanced in other areas. They are grabbing at things, holding them their hands, and are amazing at following objects/people with their eyes. Violet will actually watch tv for an extended period of time if we let her. They are also VERY close to giggling. Though I usually go by Nov. 8th for milestones they seem a little more advance than that but not quite on the level of average 4 month olds.

In all honestly, I try not to compare them to much and just marvel at their own development thus far. They have moved from what I call the "slug phase" to the "worm phase." Instead of just eating and sleeping they now interact with their environment, which is just amazing to me. Every week it is something new and wonderful and every pedi appt has been good, so I just remind myself they have had to breath air a lot longer than they should have, which takes a lot of work.

    I hope this helps.

If your pedi is adjusting for age, then you can too! If they are developing normally and weight and height etc.....then they probably don't adjust.

Mine were 31 weekers, I we and the ped used adjusted until the boys were 2. It is hard, because when people would ask how old they were, it was hard to answer. If we knew them well, we would tell them 4 months but they should be 2 months... If we didn't know them, we'd leave it alone... In terms of knowing what to expect, I would not expect them to do anything that wasn't adjusted age. In other words, right now they should be doing what 2 weekers do... Does that make sense?
