I'm taking my little girl for a scan of her deep sacral dimple. Has anyone's kids had this done? I'm so nervous, is there anything I can look for during the U/S? I hate that I'm going to have to have the doctor call me with the results. What should I expect?

    Thanks,
    Mona

The ultrasound will be easy and painless for her. Just like all of our pregnancy ultrasounds. Much quicker though as they are just looking for things like the tip end of the spinal cord but I don't think you are going to be able to tell much on your own. Depends on the technologist whether they explain to you what they are seeing. I am a nurse and I have a friend who is also a nurse and her 5 yo has the deepest sacral dimple I've ever seen and she is just fine! Good luck to you!

I just tokk my daughter last week to have this done. It was easy and fast. But unlike you the hospital we go to gives you the results before you leave. And all was well with our daughter. The doctor did say that it is very rare for something to be wrong so I will be thinking about you and your baby ans I hope you have the same outcome as we did.

I just wanted to say I hope you have better luck than we did. Our tech said that they usually perform the US on babies younger than 3 months no problem but any older and they have a difficult time seeing anything. We tried it but they couldn't see what they needed so they had to do an xray which was awful b/c she had to be held still. She was just about 7 months at the time. Anyhow, like I said, I hope it goes much better for you.

    Hi Ladies,

You're all so great! Thanks for all of the input. I asked to speak to the doctor in the radiology lab and she told me everything looked fine. My daughter is very small, she weighs about the same as an average 3 month old, so I think that's why they were able to see what they needed to see.

Heather - Sacral dimple is an indentation some babies have at the top of their butt/base of spine. It could be an indicator of a problem or nothing at all.

Both of my boys have sacral dimples, but we have not had them checked out. However, my husband actually had a hole instead of a dimple and after our flight back from Australia, He developed a pilonidal cyst which had to be removed (an 8 month recovery as they leave it as an open wound which has to be packed!!). This was as a result of the hole (dimple). So I asked whether my boys could have the surgery when they are small, to avoid the horribility of it as an adult, and I was told that the cavity must be infected to have the surgery.

So... many people go through life without the cavity ever getting infected, and nothing has to be done, but if it is infected it is really painful and annoying!!!!
