There was way too much excitement for us last night. Here's the update for those who are interested. It's hard to type from bed, so I'm copying and pasting my journal entry for today. This is written for friends and family who aren't as well-versed on terminology as all of you, so forgive the simplicity.

I really hoped to go through my whole life without a ambulance ride, but no such luck. The contractions yesterday increased in number, regularity, and intensity until the people at the hospital said it was time to come in. We drove to Willmar with the hope that we would get some meds to stop things and be sent home. Unfortunately, the doctor didn't think we were stable enough to even stay in Willmar, so at 12:20 a.m. I left Willmar in an ambulance and DH followed in the car to the U of MN Fairview.

Before leaving Willmar, I was given another dose of steroids for the babies. They also loaded me up on anti-contraction meds. Fortunately my blood pressure cooperated this time so I can use the Nifedipine. When I got to the U, I was still having more contractions than were acceptable and they were getting pretty uncomfortable. The perinatologist (high risk OB), decided to add Indocin back into the mix. This was the med that caused the babies' fluid to be too low, but we hope to only use it for two days to get the contractions slowed down and then drop back to just the Nifedepine.

The good news is that the contractions were at an acceptable level this morning and the peri says he thinks we can hold off the babies' arrival for at least 48 hours and we may be surprised an go for several more weeks. So I was moved from labor and delivery to the antepartum side of the unit. That's somewhat reassuring. I get one last booster dose of steroids tonight. I joked with DH that the babies will come out looking like Hans and Franz (from the old SNL skits) and follow after Barry Bonds claiming they had never knowingly used steroids.

Well at least you will have great stories to tell them when they are older… I now tell my DS all the stuff I went through from being prego with him… and I hope they stay in a couple more weeks….

Wow, this has really been a roller coaster ride of a pregnancy for you!!!
Did you think it was kind of weird being in the ambulance- I had my first one during this pregnancy too, and it just felt kind of surreal!!!
Hopefully they will hang in there a bit longer for you, and they meds will do their jobs. I guess if nothing else it is great that you have had the steroids and you did make it past that 28 week mark :)

    Beth,
I'm glad things are stable for now. I think our babies must have instant messaging access and be scheming together because I was in L&D last night too. Take care and keep us updated!

I'm glad those babies are still staying put, I was so scared of an ambulance ride too!

Just an FYI, my peri stopped Indocin at 26 weeks because it's not supposed to be taken in the third trimester. It can cause the babies' ductus arteriosis to prematurely close in the womb and it shouldn't close until they are born. Indocin is the same drug they sometimes give preemies to close their patent ductus arteriosis (ductus arteriosis that did not close at birth due to prematurity).

Yeah. The Indocin is only being used for 48 hours to get things under control. It is frequently given until the 28th week, so we're still o.k. It was either that or the babies were coming before they could re-administer the steroids. Now that things are stable again they will keep me on the Nifedipine and hope that can handle the contractions by itself.

I do hope today you are able to rest. You have been going through a lot and I know you must be stressed and nervous. Hang in there.
