    Hi there,

Just wondering do all babies born before 40 weeks have their age adjusted? And when do you stop adjusting their age?

    TIA

I don't know if all pedis adjust age for all babies born before 40 weeks. Our pedi uses adjusted age for their growth charts and she said she will until they are 2. I usually keep in mind adjusted age when meeting milestones too.

My pedi stopped doing the adjusted weight chart for them at 4 months actual, when they made it onto the regular chart. And he never really adjusted for them unless he asked about something they should be doing and weren't, then he'd adjust down two months to see if they were still in normal range.

EI still adjusts for some of Grace's delays, but the pedi never does.

My boys were 7 weeks early and our pedi uses their adjusted age. I use it for milestones and when they were really little I would tell strangers their adjusted age so I wouldn't have to go into the "they were early" schpeal. Around 6 months, I didn't have to explain why they were small b/c they were back to average.

The general rule is that you do not have to adjust any longer when the weeks of prematurity no longer matter.. That sounds silly but it makes sense.

Let's imagine baby is 12 weeks old or 7 adjusted.. That's a five week difference which is a TON in terms of the age of baby.. It is more than 50% of the baby's age.

When the baby is 36 months old or roughly 160 weeks-- then 5 weeks is NOTHING in comparison to the age of the baby it's about 3% of the total age so it's not a big deal..

It's kind of how you think about a five year old dating a 15 year old being CRAZY.. (Seems like a HUGE difference at this time.)

But when a 30 year old dates a 40 year old-- it's not strange AT ALL.. The differential evens out later on in life--- Same with adjusted age.

    Does that make sense??

Thanks everyone.... much clearer - my girls were 3 weeks early - so it isn't much of an adjustment.... Just wondering for growth spurts etc....

Hope everyone is having a great day.

    :p
