I also thought Cara at first. Even when I read what you meant it to be it took me a second to put it together.

When I read it I say Cara with a long A. :( Beautiful name, but it will be misspoken most of the time I fear.

I also assumed it was pronounced like "Cara" with a long "a."
    How about spelling it Keira?

Very pretty names. I thought baby B was Cara though.

I read it with a soft "C" sound, also wrong.

I appreciate wanting to honor the heritage, but as a person whose name IRL is similar to a more popular one and therefore ALWAYS gets mispronounced by people, I would vote to spell it in a way that Americans will pronounce it correctly when they see it. It's so annoying to be called by the wrong name all the time. When I was younger I'd try to say it again, or come up with rhymes, but mostly that didn't matter to people, and they pronounced it the way they wanted to. Now I don't even bother, I just answer to the wrong name.

I love being online with my online name (Ruby) that everyone gets right on the first try.

:snicker:most Irish names are had to pronounce here!!
One of my girls is Kiara, an Irish name as well but we are always asked how they say it. We pronounce the As short and not long. Key are ah
Kiera is prounced Kear ah, just like the actress!

picking names can be such fun!!! As far as everyone saying it wrong and having to correct, I think you will find that with most names, first or last!

I would say it "SARA" if I was reading that. I don't think that even one person out of 10,000,000 would pronounce it correctly, unfortunately. It's a pretty name tho. I am a teacher and I see how EVERYONE butchers kids' names that are spelled "differently" and in my opinion, it really isn't worth setting your child up for that for his/her entire life.

ae together usually make a long ay sound - like Rae or Mae. So I thought the name was 'Kay-ra'
If you want 'Keerah' you could swap the and e around - Ceara. Not as pretty though, and some might pronounce it "Kiara"
As an aside, I really like Kiara for a name.

I went by my middle name my whole life (alison) and never used my first name (ary). IT was terible having to correct people. I totally support the idea of not wanting to put a child through that.

I look at that name and went huh? Irish names are very hard to promounce and agree if you are going to live in America, it may benefit her to use a more americanized spelling for her sake.

Irish names are generally hard to pronounce in English and leave me going umm, ok. But If you are choosing it because it's a traditional Irish name, I'd go with that spelling, but if I saw it written and had to pronounce i my instint would be Cayra again as a nother poster said, ae usually makes that sound. But once you told me it was Keera, I could go with that. The girl will be constantly correcting people, but a lot of people are in that boat these days.

we are choosing it because it is a very strong irish name and her middle name is after my husbands aunt who put up an amazing fight with cancer, we wanted her to have as stong of a first name as her middle name
    caera means strong lady

And it is beautful name to boot!
People these days are so much more accepting of different spellings, cultural names and just plain different names! Kids grow up with a huge variety of names in their classrooms, a name like Caera will hardly cause a ripple. Go for it!

Then in that case I wouldn't change the spelling.

At first glance I thought it was just a different way of spelling Sierra. As a teacher I see more and more kids coming in with names that parents are trying to make unique by changing the spelling. I never assume I know the name. I will ask the child if I am unsure. However, I would agree it will not cause a ripple but I think that your duaghter will forever be correcting people with her name spelled that way. Not the worst thing in the world but may get annoying to her.

May I add that we love Irish names and their spellings and we too have had to change spellings of names for our children just to accomodate for the way we Americans would say it. Beautiful name you have choosen. Good luck on your decision.

I also saw Sierra (or Ciara). I think spellings are going to be inevitable whichever name you choose. My daughter's name is Brooke, which I thought wouldn't have any problems but some people spell it without the "e". My name is Trudi and people always spell it with an "ie" or a "y". At least people have been able to pronunciate them though. I think Caera would be difficult for most people to pronunciate.

We are having g/g twins and are thinking of Kendall and Kiera, which I am sure people will misspell both even though it is intuitive to us.

naming is so hard. Also, I love the "k" in Monika, especially if it is that way in your family.
