Hi everyone! Katherine was born yesterday. I had a great day...everything went smoothly (planned csection) and my baby girl was born healthy!

I was given a nipple shield because I needed one. Throughout the day yestererday, she did finally latch on to the shield so that was good. In the middle of the night though I had a hard time because I was so darn tired. She was not latching well so I pumped and they gave that through a syringe.

The biggest problem is that she is so sleepy! And that is the reason she stops sucking most of the time. It is kind of hard too I think having a csection because today I was in a ton of pain and it was harder to move her and I got tired easily!

She has poop diapers and wet diapers so I know everything is ok. I just cant wait for the milk to come in so I can see her sucking more and then I know she is ok!

I do wish I did not need the shield. Do you think after my milk comes in, I may not need it?

I am so thankful to all of you who answered my pre birth threads! It made me know going into this that she does not need much and to just feed her often. Because she sleeps all the time though, it has been every 3 hours rather then me feeding her in between those times.

And if anything you read here sticks out to you and you want to comment on something you would do differently, please do so!

Congrats on your little girl! Newborns are sleepy- just do the usual of stripping her down and annoying her to keep her awake. (rub head, dim lights, cool washcloth, etc).

    I don't think you'll need a nippleshield forever. She's just a day old- I'm sure she'll catch on with practice. :)

It is very normal for her to be sleepy at this point. Every day she will have more periods of alertness and will likely start cluster feeding. These periods are often on the middle of the night so try to sleep as much as you can during the day when she is so sleepy! Congrats :)

:th_holidayhug: Congratulations! (I love the blowing kisses so this is a Birthday Hug rather than a "holiday" one.)

It sounds like you are doing good--the second day the pain hit me too--hold in there it doesn't last long and remember WALKING helps it get better faster. Even if you think, getting up and walking is the last thing I want to do--Do it! When she falls alseep, get up and walk a bit, then go back to bed and rest yourself.

    Day 3 update!

Its going very well! My milk is coming in and I have my pain under control! I still do not know how those of you nursed twins!

Amazing what a difference it has made to have hospital support. They have been so great!

Also what a difference to have just one baby and be a second time mom! WIth the boys I was such a mess but this is a much more peaceful experience!

Isn't it! I'm 15 months in and I still am amazed almost daily how much easier the first (and now second year) was/is. I know some is due to being an experienced mom, and some is due to having just one baby. Do you have a good baby carrior, like a sling or something? It will really help you get out and do things with your boys if the baby gets used to feeding and sleeping in a sling.

Nicole are you guys still using the shield? and if you don't mind my asking, what /why were you using it?
If theres a lactation consultant , La leech league leader or FRIEND that can help you work on that latch the sooner the better! While shields are a VERY useful tool its super nice to nurse with no tools needed :)

I am and dont want to be. I try often without it...I often take her off in a feeding and put her back without it. She just wont suck. When the lactation specialist tried in the hospital, once she got latched, she stopped sucking and wanted us to do the work for her. A few times the past few days, I put her on w/o it, she sucks and then stops. I really should make an appointment to try to see how I can get her off. Yesterday she had a dr app and it was a pain. I cant wait to just put her on me and in the middle of the night it is a pain too.
My nipple was not inverted or bad. I think it was her just not being able to suck hard???

it might be her reflex. Babies know to suck when they feel something pressed on their palate. With a nipple shield its really easy to stimulate that palate. With a breast its a little bit harder. you have to get a lot o breast in the tiny mouth. thats why often times moms that need to use shields can get baby to relatch if they've been nursing awhile with it on and then take it off, or if they pump a few minutes prior and then latch baby cause the nipple is already very drawn out.

Try nursing in a football type position so you can aim your nipple towards the palate and really see what you are doing before latching baby on.
I had to use a shield for about 5 weeks. We got it off just like you said you were doing, we practiced feeds without it and I would try to whip it off halfway through. Eventually it just clicked. Keep practicing you will get there!
you could also try a little breast compression often a gush of milk will make them start swallowing in a hurry :)

CONGRATULATIONS! Love the name and can't wait to see pictures.

Hang in there.. bf'ing is such a process. It takes a few weeks to find a comfortable way to do it and make everything work. She's learning too, so if the nipple shield is working for now then go with it and be glad she's establishing a good supply. I'd definitely go to a lactation consultant too if you get the chance. I had a physician LC who (literally!) saved my life and really helped me get proper latch and reduce the pain of bf'ing.
