    3 years, 2 months.

We went on a trip to San Diego and ended up putting the seats in forward facing to accomodate more luggage space. When we came back we decided to stick with it since they are within a pound of the rear-facing limit.

I thought it would end the kicking. Um, no.

The bolded part drives me batty! It hadn't even crossed my mind that they might kick my seat when forward facing <_< We switched a few months ago and it does seem that the novelty has worn off some. I still have to have gentle reminders to not kick mommy's seat. *sigh*

And congrats for making it so long!

Are they liking it, at least?

I just switched Kev, because Karina has been forward-facing for some time (she's 34 pounds, and about 38 inches tall), and she was kicking *him* in the face. Not good. I'd hoped to leave him rear-facing for some time yet, but I was seriously worried she'd knock out his teeth. He's about 30 pounds, and maybe only a couple inches shorter than she is, so I'm justifying it....can you tell I have mama guilt about the whole thing?

He is SO happy now, though! He loves looking out the front window. He's in the middle of the second row and can't reach a seat to kick, but yeah, Karina rides with her feet permanently pushed into the driver's seat. <_<

Yeah, the kicking is no fun ... mine do it occassionally ... but we ignore it, and they usually stop. I'm sure your boys are just enjoying throwing their legs around ... hopefully the novelty will wear off, and they will go back to being the perfect little quiet angels in the car, like I know they can be!

Wow, good for you! We switched our giant children around at like 14 months or so. And yes, now they kick the back of our seats, yay.

Wow, that's awesome they made it rfing for so long! :) We switched our oldest son at 26 months when he was within 1lb of the limit. Hopefully the kicking will taper off......

Um, no...they are kicking EACH OTHER (not the seats). They do this thing where they fling their leg sideways and kick at one another. If one boy has his hand resting on the side of his chair he's likely to get it foot-pinched. Drives. me. batty.

Well, I think the fact that they are still (comfortably) wearing size 24m pants alleviated the usual rush-to-turn-them-around as it was less physically challenging. Could you be implying that their oompa loompa legs may in fact be a chicken/egg issue? I can see the headline now: Parents stunt child's growth in over-portective safety attempt

I've found nothing appealing about forward facing. Nothing. The seat backs and car doors are gross all of the time now from their dirty little shoes hitting them even after 5 million reminders to keep their feet down. I've been hit in the back of the head by a flying shoe more than once.

Trevor discovered sitting cross-legged today. I'm trying to play that up as the cool new thing. Unfortunately, he also discovered today how to unlatch the car door with his foot  I've been keeping the windows locked for ages since they thought it was incredibly funny to roll them up and down with their toes and now they can operate the release so police car doors it is. HOW did kids survive 40 years ago? Was the thrill of being loose in the vehicle enough that they didn't think of these things?

What's the limit now? is it not 20# any more? I must be way out of touch. I switch mine right after their first birthday as long as they're 20#. Y'all are giving me that old-school feeling once again LOL.

20 pounds AND 12-months old is the minimum age/weight for forward-facing seats. Most convertible car seats have an upper rear-facing weight limit of around 30 pounds and the height limit is when the top of their head is within an inch of the top of the seat back. Kids who are under 30 pounds (and not all torso ;) ) can remain rear-facing much longer than 12-months and 20 pounds.

Rear-facing is much safer for the child in case of an accident.

The APA recently came out with a recommendation to keep your children rear-facing until age two (not one).

I ignore it too. My DH is constantly telling them to stop but I tell him to try his hardest to tune it out.

Oh wow, that's WONDERFUL you were able to RF so long!!! We're getting close to having to switch ours (J is 30lbs), and I am so NOT looking forward to it. I guess I just don't understand how some folks think it's "so much better" and are in such a rush to do so! (I had this conversation w/ my cousin today, who still can't believe they're RF.) Not only is there the safety issue, but just thinking of them throwing things at me, kicking my seat, throwing things down on the floor and screaming because they can't get it.... AND once we FF, that means I won't be able to use our DVD player between them- it'll have to be in front of just one!
