A little bit of hope

Discussion in 'Pregnancy Help' started by thejamiesonfamily, Oct 2, 2008.

While I was in the hospital I visited this site a lot mostly to read others comments and get an idea of what I could expect from week to week if my girls were to come. I got a lot of hope from many of your posts and so I thought I'd just post my story for those like me who may feel like there isn't much hope for their present situation.

I found out I was pregnant in early Feb. and because of some heavy spotting, I had an ultrasound done a week later and found out I was having twins! Throughout my pregnancy there was concern about my cervix which was funneling. My doctor remained positive, however and I didn't see any real cause for alarm. He started me on progesterone shots at 16 weeks, and I got them once a week. At about 24 weeks he told me to be less active, but that normal chores around the house and short outing were fine. At 26w 3d, my last appt. with my dr. because my husband and I were moving, my doctor gave me the unwelcome truth that my condition was worse, my cervix was very short and I needed to get in to see a doctor as soon as possible when I arrived at my destination. Gratefully, we had some friends in San Antonio (where we were moving for a few months), one of which was an ob. He got me into the doctor four days after my arrival (I was 27wks) and I was promptly admitted to the hospital to recieve steroids. After 4 days in the hospital they let me go home on strict bedrest. 4 days later due to cramping I found myself back at the hospital with a terribly short cervix and dialated to a 3. I was on pretty strict bedrest, but the doctors would let me visit other anti partum patients every once in a while and that was nice. In my 31st week I went into labor and moved to L&D and given indocin (I think that's what it's called) b/c my blood pressure was too low for procardia. After 24 hours the contrations had stopped and I was moved back to anti partum. At 32w 2d I went into labor again and was dialated to a 5 or 6 and put on Mag this time - hated the stuff and I think the poor nurse that had me for the last 12 hours of it probably hated me - but it seemed to have worked because my labor stopped. They gave me one dose of procardia the next night and increased my progesterone shots to bi-weekly and I sat around quite happily for almost 3 more weeks. After 34 weeks the doctors decided that if I went into labor, they wouldn't stop it again and at 35w 2d my girls came (very quickly) at 6:24 and 6:29am. They were delivered vaginally - YAY! - and were 4lbs 15.3oz and 4lbs 14.9oz and 18.5 in long! The best part of the whole thing was that after I delivered I turned to my doctor and asked if they were going to be taken to the nicu. They never had to go to the nicu at all and 48 hours after I delivered we got to bring them home! None of the doctors, except for mine, had been very positive about my condition and when I told them I wanted the girls to wait till at least 34 weeks to come, I practically got laughed at a few times. My doctor, however, was positive and kept telling me to hold on so they wouldn't have to go to the nicu for as long. Being in anti-partum for so long was definately rough, but in the end it was all worth it!

Thank you sooo much for sharing your story, it really has lifted my spirits as it sounds exactly like mine.... I'm 32wks 1 day and on strict bedrest in the antipartum unit of the hospital. Hopefully my girls and I can share the same story as you, hold off a little longer and avoid the NICU ;) Again, so glad you shared your story - thank you!!

I just came across this thread thanks to someone else bumping it to the top of the list! I really needed to hear your story. I have been in the hospital since November 10 due to short cervix, funnelling and pre-term labor. I am 31 weeks today and I keep praying for a minimal NICU stay for our girls. Of course I would love to take them home with me when I get to go home. Thanks for giving me hope!

That does definitely give *me* hope :) But more importantly, I'm so happy that your little girls decided to hang on for a little (a LOT!) longer so that they could come out healthy! What strong girls (and Mommy) they are!
