i just found out that one of the kids my son's age, 16 months, has chicken pox, and when i talked to the mom she said the docs say, it's not a big deal and that her sister (8) is not really at risk for catching it, and didn't say anything about daycare... i think she is just saying that to not look completely irresponsible. I am soooo upset! what should i do. and when i called her she said, watch out your kids don't get it, like joking about it!aaaahhhhhh i want to scream!

I would contact your pedi and keep an eye on your kiddos to make sure the tell tale signs don't show up. I hope they don't get it

Chicken pox has a long infectious period - up to 21 days before the spots show up. So if your son has been around her child there is a chance he will already be infected. I don't think you can really do anything now. Here children are banned from daycare and school until all the spots have crusted over and the child is no longer infectious.

if your child is vaccinated, it shouldn't be a big issue, plus chicken pox is airborne, so if someone had it, it was in the air and remember, all of us got the chicken pox and survived.

As the PP pointed out, given the long incubation period, your has likely already been exposed. And for the same reason there's little point in being angry at the other parent. Her child was also exposed long before s/he came down sick - and the mother may not have even know about the exposure.

seems weird the doctor said not to worry about the 8 year old because they could get it. Just keep your eyes on the your little ones it could still be 2 or 3 weeks until they get it. My girls had it 14 days apart.

We had an outbreak of 26 cases last spring at the school I work at. Most of those kids had been vaccinated. Like PPs said, there isn't a lot you can do. I'm sure the mother doesn't know where the child got it and wasn't knowingly exposing others. I called the pedi to see if my kids should get their second shot ahead of schedule since school age kids go to their daycare and because I had contact with all the kids who had chicken pox at school (I'm the music teacher). He said there was no reason for them to get the second shot until Kindergarten.

Like a PP said, we all got it and survived. :)

Just think, you could save yourself the cost of an immunization/the agony of one more shot. . .Just if they do get sick do not give them aspirin.

we dont have vaccinations for chicken pox over here, children just get it. my eldest was 20 months old when he got it and it wasnt too bad. im kind of hoping mine will get it this summer so i dont need to take time off work. we need to keep ours off until the spots have scabbed over but as pp says its a bit pointless as the infectious time is before then.
still annoying that people will laugh about the prospect of yours getting it.
