I had a peri visit today and things went ok. Not great, though. All along Baby B has been a week behind Baby A (Baby A being on target for the week we've been in) and it hasn't been a big deal...as long as they stayed about a week apart. Well, now Baby A is a week ahead of where she should be (1 lb. 12 oz.) and Baby B is a week behind (1 lb. 5 oz.), which makes them 2 weeks apart :( They are definitely in 2 sacs, though, so there is NO chance for Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (thank God), but the peri wants to watch me closer. I go back in 3 weeks instead of 4. UGH :( It really put an entire damper on our visit, needless to say. We're all worried now. Has anyone else had experience with this?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jackie

I had my ultrasound at 26weeks. My girl was 1 pound and 13 ounces and was about 4 days behind and my boy was 2 pounds and 4' ounces and was about 1 week ahead. My doctor says that is fine and normal. She wasn't at all concerned. She said that they don't really worry at this stage... I don't know if that helps at all.

It sounds like your doctors are keeping a good eye on things. It is still really early and there is time for the other baby to catch up. Also, ultrasounds are not perfect and are not always accurate in predicting the weights of the babies.

    Hang in there...

Mine were the same way - big discrepancy. Now if you look at them from the rear - one is probably 3 inches wider. (We call one "chicken butt" and the other "wide load")
I worried the whole pregnancy, but they have been perfectly healthy since the day they were concieved. Just different babies!

that is exactly what happened to us at right about the same point. that's when I had to see the peri every other week and also the OB so I had a dr appt. every week! they also made me stop working and I had to be on bedrest. all that said - my baby A was supposed to be my small one - but when she was born she was a little bigger! I remember that appt like it was yesterday and I am sorry you had to hear that but also remember - they will keep a close eye on them but even though they are twins, they are 2 separate people so they may never weigh exactly the same.

Did the peri say what could cause it?

Dianna--I "think" (words kind of went in one ear and out the other after he said he was concerned) he said that the smaller one may not be getting enough nutrients/oxygen, but there's nothing I can do...they'll just watch me closer.

Thanks for the stories, Ladies. It does help to hear others were in the same boat. I know they don't need to be exactly alike, but when he said they don't want there to be a difference bigger than 20% and mine are 25%, it really made me nervous :(

So glad that your doctors are going to see you more often. Your girls are 2 different people... one is just a little bigger than the other. It's going to be hard - but try not to worry too much.

I do not remember what my two were like, but at the last ultra sound they were "possibly" 1 1/2 lbs apart but the machinge said it was alsp a + or - 1/2 a lb or so(sorry I do not remember exactly) but they came out 2 pounds different and 2 inches. They are watching them, they are two little individuals. Now, at three there is almost 5 lbs between them and about three inches. they are very different body sizes-structurally.

Good luck with the rest of your PG and with your little ones when they arive!

Mine were always about 2 weeks apart. At birth they were 5-2 and 6-6. Both were completely healthy. The cord blood lady said my daughters cord was very skinny and my sons very fat.

Now at almost 5 months they are closer to 2.5 pounds apart and the gap gets bigger daily. My son takes about 12 more ounces than my daughter per day.

Being in separate sacs is good, but do they share a placenta or each have their own?
Some babies have IUGR and I'm not sure what would help with that...women with ttts tend to do alot of bedrest and drink ensure. You could try increasing your protein intake and see if it helps.

I would hope that the doctor is comparing their growth to the norm of what a baby should be around that gestation and not so much compared to the other twin. If they are fraternal, they could very well be different sizes and weights.

They do have their own placentas...thank God, so he said there is no chance of TTTS. I think I'll still up my protein drinks, though. I'll do anything!!

I do wonder the same thing about the twins being compared to each other. I "think" A is actually measuring a week ahead of schedule now (DH couldn't confirm, but that's what I thought the peri said/I saw on the screen) and B is just measuring a week behind schedule as usual. If that's the case, I wouldn't think it was a big deal at all!!!! A is just a hog ;) And B is being B. But, the peri said he's concerned b/c they don't like to see a difference greater than 20% and it's 25% now. I don't know what to think.

I do know I have to stop trying to research this on the internet b/c it just makes me more worried!!

When we did our big anatomy u/s at 20w they did look at the cords and blood flow to/from the placenta and all looked good. I know a lot can happen in a month, but wouldn't they have had a concern then?

It was never a concern for my Peri and I was there 2x a week. They did the whole doppler thing every visit and although one cord was thinner it was in the normal range. I only found out it was smalled after they were born. Obviously it was not enough for the Peri to be concerned. Both babies are quite healthy, my daughter was just a small 37 weeker!

It seems to me if they are definately fraternal that there shouldn't be too much cause for concern; they are different babies and one may just naturally be smaller than the other.
My babies both had IUGR, due to probably TTTS, and my peri and ob told me there wasn't much I could do beyond the usual advise: drink water, eat as much as possible, and stay off my feet.
With careful monitoring, I'm sure they'll be fine! :hug99:

Well, the peri still says that we won't know 100% that they're fraternal until we have genetic testing done on them. Who knows? He didn't even tell me to drink water or eat or anything, so it can't be that bad, right?? I am going to do those things, though ;) At least I'll feel like I'm doing "something"!

I actually posted this same topic a few weeks ago. My twins are b/g, and the girl was measuring at 3lbs 4 oz, and the boy was 4 lbs 5 oz....and they were about two weeks apart size wise. The peri had me come in two weeks later to check their growth again, and now she is 4lbs 7 oz, and he is 5lbs 4 oz...and still about 2 weeks apart. There have always been about a week or two difference in their size, but he wanted to make sure it was nothing more then genetics that was causing their difference in size. He said they are different babies....and as long as both are still growing well at each appointment that is all that matters. Try not to worry, as hard as that is....I am sure they are both fine!
