How many naps do your 9 month olds take?? Ours are down to 1. Their first nap isn't until 10-11ish, and for about 1.5-2 hours. By the time they want to take their second nap, it's 5 p.m. and they'll just sleep for the rest of the night. So we've gotten to where we will keep them playing, and bedtime is now at 6:30 and they will *usually* sleep until about 5:30-6ish the next morning, with 1 or 2 wakings in the night.....

The problem is that they are so darn cranky becuase of only getting one nap. By dinnertime, they're screaming at everyone and everything. Poor things I feel bad but I don't want them going to bed at 5 p.m. either..... I tried one day letting them sleep for an hour, and then they didn't go to bed until after 9, so nothing got done that night. And they still woke up at their regular time too the next morning....

Yikes! Mine are 12months and still take two naps. They definitely need it. Have you tried just putting them down at 2 or 3pm whether or not they were acting tired? It never ceases to amaze me that when I think they will not nap b/c they're acting so happy, playing, etc, they go right to sleep! Not always, of course, but a lot of the time. Even if they don't sleep, mine will usually play quietly in the cribs and rest a bit, giving me some time to get stuff done. Just now, DD went for her nap early because she's getting a cold but DS was running around playing and laughing. 20 minutes later, I put him down even though he wasn't acting tired. He cried a bit but is now sleeping peacefully.

Maybe if you just get into this routine, their little bodies will adapt vs waiting for them to "act" tired.

    good luck!

My oldest son took two naps until around 18 months, and slept 12 hours at night. I cannot imagine one nap being enough for a 9 month old. I would personally make a shift in their schedule to get them a second nap, and then put them down around 7 at night.

At 9 months mine still took 3 on some days. Can you put them down before 10-11am? That seems to be the only option for getting 2 naps back. Mine went down to one nap at 17 months.

We went down to 1 at 14 months, and somedays they could still take 2. At 9 months we were going down at 9 and 1.

Mine have been on only 1 nap for about a month and a half now. It drives me insane. They would get so cranky because they were overtired-but they wouldn't nap. Finally I have gotten their 1 nap to last 3+ hours and they seem to be fine now. They are sleeping 12-ish hours at night and they are happy so I figure they are fine. My DS started cutting out his second nap around 10 months.

I am so afraid that this is going to happen to us! They dropped their early morning nap when we were still on 3 naps a day, and now they just play in their cribs after their first bottle from 6:30 to 7:30.

Mine nap at 9am and 2 pm most days. Bedtime around 6:30/7.
I agree with pp, can you try to put them down for naps a bit earlier? Do whatever your morning nap routine is around 2 or 3 and see what happens.
Even if you can get them to play quietly with a toy or books in their cribs in a dimly lit room, you would at least have a bit of downtime!

I agree with pps here. If I were you, I would try to put them down again. One nap at this age, I would think, is just not enough. For them or you. Everyone needs a little down time and more than once in the day. Good luck. It'll work itself out....

Mine are almost 11 months old and still taking 3 naps a day. They are all at least an hour long, sometimes longer.

Thank you SO much for posting this as I've been told that my girls will be dropping one nap soon. I think it's too early too!!! They still take 2 good naps now and still go down for bed at 6:30pm. and they are rubbing their eyes and yawning at that point! They go down for first nap after breakfast about 8:30 - 9am and take a good 2hr nap, then their second is after lunch about 1-1:30 pm. they will usually take a shorter second nap - but they still get atleast 1 - 1 1/2 hour. The only time they won't get a second nap in is if we are doing something on the weekends and then they will snooze in the car on the way there / back. Yesterday they hardly napped at all - due to their Dad getting them at noon - and OMG - I've never seen 2 VERY wired babies. Not really fussy - just wired!!! Jumping all over each other - crawling SO fast at things they know they shouldn't be in - etc. It was very comical - but I couldn't do it every Sunday and I know it's not good for them either. Thanks again for the post as I learned so much from it too!!!!
