so, my boys are now 6 weeks old and ti seems like they are never sleeping. It seems like my older son slept all the time at this age. can you tell me about how much yours slept at this age?

    here is their schedule, about.
wake at 6:30 and then they are up until about 11:00.
they sleep until 2 usually and then are awake until about 5 or 6.
    sleep for about an hour.
    awake until 10 or so.
    then the nightly feedings.

the main reason I am asking is b/c when they are awakee, they are usually VERY cranky. i am here by myself with my 17 month old son so it is hard to concentrate on just one baby to get them to sleep. they seem so tired. do you have any suggestions on how to get them to sleep durng they day? are they sleeping enough? how often did your sleep?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR ADVICE!

I think their periods of wakefulness are way too long. With dd I followed Weissbluth (he's our pediatrician as well) and she was never awake for more than 2 hours (he calls it the 2-hour window), in the first weeks it was only half an hour or an hour, before we put her back down again. When children get overtired they don't (fall) sleep well and become cranky. My dd wasn't up for 3 hours until she was way older ... she dropped her morning nap (9 am) at around 18 months so by that time she was doing 3-4 hour stretches during the day. Even now, she wakes up at 3 pm and she's in bed by 7 pm. She's a perfect sleeper right from the start. Some babies just need more sleep and can't handle the long periods of wakefulness.

that's what i thought. I just have so much trouble getting them back asleep. it is just me here by myself during the day with both babies, and my 17 month old son. i also think their nursery was too bright. we've blacked out their windows so hopefully that will help. everytime i get them asleep they wake up crying in their crib. do you have any suggestions on helping them fall asleep? do you just lay them down before the 2 hour window?

    thank you

I also try to abide by the "no more than 2 hours awake" based on the Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child book.

Have you tried swaddling them? I swear by swaddling. My guys only wake up when they come unwrapped. Plus Morgan just has trouble shutting off sometimes when he's overtired (e.g. I missed the "tired" signs). If I wrap him, he's out like a light.

    Hope that helps. Shannon

I am having that same issue and mine are 6 weeks, too. Actually, I am having that issue with my boy...he is awake all the time. But, unlike you little ones, he just stays up -no crying, no fussiness - he is just up looking around all the time. I think he gets a few one hour stretches in there throughout the day, but most of the day he is awake.

Both of them are requiring more feeds and amounts. Could that be your problem? Are they getting enough food at each feeding? Just a thought.

But, I am interested to this answer as well.

    Hang in there.

I'm surprised yours are able to stay awake that long! Mine are rarely awake longer than one hour, and usually not alert (actively awake/playing) for more than a half hour.

Our schedule is something like this:

    7am-8am: Awake & Play
    8am-10am: nap
    10am-11am: wake up/nurse
    11am-1pm: nap
    1pm- 2pm: wake up/nurse
    2pm-4 or 5pm: nap
    4 or 5pm to 8pm: wake up/nurse/micro nap/fuss
    8pm-10pm: nap
    10pm: wake up/nurse
10pm-7am (wake up 2-3 more time to nurse)

    Mine are 7 weeks

my babies were literally asleep about 22 hours out of a typical 24 hour day! They slept ALL the time! They did this till about 2.5 months old. I don't know why, they were born at 35 wks...so they weren't too early.
I swaddled them very tight and layed them down as soon as they got done drinking a bottle. I was too busy with my other 2 kids to sit and hold them or entertain them. Not only that, they wouldn't stay up for nothing!
Try letting them cry for a little bit in their crib and see if they give it up????

    hang in there!
