5.5 year old and staying dry at night

My 5.5 year old has been potty-trained for over 2 years, but he has been in nighttime pull-ups because he does not stay dry at night. He doesn't wake up to pee and I wasn't about to go interrupt his sleep 1 or 2 times a night to wake him up to pee - I figured he'd stay dry at night when his body was ready and mature enough. For the past 8 nights - in a row - he has had a dry pull-up when he wakes up!! Go Lennon! Anyway, I'm nervous to take away the pull-ups - he doesn't care to wear them at all - so it isn't like he is asking if he can stop wearing them. I think he likes the security they offer of not having an accident. He was like that with diapers, too.

How long would you wait before you just had him sleep in underwear? When would you consider your child "officially" ready to ditch the nighttime pull-ups?

    Thanks! :)

My kindergartener, Aaron, will be 6 in June and still uses a pull up at night. He's been day trained for three years! He has some dry nights here and there but is wet more often than not. When he is dry for a week straight, I'll let him wear underwear to bed (after padding the bed REALLY well! lol). So in your case I'd go ahead and let him try. Congrats on eight dry mornings!

    :woo: Yay Lennon!

After 8 straight dry nights I would give it a try with no pull ups, just put a mattress protector on the bed. However if he seems really reluctant or nervous about it when you bring it up then I'd let him carry on wearing the pull-ups for a while longer.

    Thanks, Ladies! :)

I'm going to go out and buy a better quality mattress pad and then ask Lennon if he's ready to sleep with just underwear - he is on his 10th night in a row of waking up with a dry pull-up!

Here I've been looking forward to this since he's was potty-trained - and now I'm nervous about it! LOL

I would stop if he is comfortable stopping and as long as you have a waterproof mattress protector on his bed.

My 5.5 yr old DS still wears one and since it is still a craps shoot as to wether he will be totally dry in the AM, we still wear them.

    Congrats!

Ours was 7 nights so once dry seven we tried, think only one accident. I would give it a try and as others have said make sure to have the waterproof mattress cover on. Good luck

WTG Lennon!!! :clapping: I know the feeling of not knowing if this is for real. Nathan would randomly go 4 or 5 nights in a row dry and then wake up wet for the next 2 weeks. After much fear on my part he finally stayed dry for a whole week. As William has been in underwear for a couple of months now, Nathan was itching to try. So we let him. He has done pretty good so far. The time changed messed with him a couple of nights, but since he readjusted his sleep schedule he has been fine. I'm with everyone else. Get a good waterproof mattress pad, make sure you have some clean sheets ready and give it a try. Nathan knows if he has an accident more than 2 days in a row he has to go back in his pull up until he can stay dry for 2 days again. Mommy just can't handle that "I'm wet" call at 6am too many days in a row.

I say go for it! I agree with a waterproof mattress cover first though.

Hmmmm...night #11, he woke up with a wet pull-up. I'm trying to think if we did anything different in regards to drinks, etc. before bed.

Definitely need to purchase a good quality waterproof mattress protector before we give it a go without pull-ups! :)

Don't feel bad, Nathan woke up soaked as well (unfortunately his was all over the well protected bed).

I think I had Nadia in pull-ups for a good six months after she started staying dry most of the time, LOL. I just didn't want to deal with it, and she didn't care, either.

She was wet every night through about 4.5, then started staying dry sporadically...a few months after she turned 5, she had a cut/scrape or something that the pull-up was irritating, so she wanted to wear underwear to bed. We never looked back after that. I think she's had one small bed-wetting incident since then -- definitely have a good waterproof mattress pad on the bed.

(She was day trained at 26 months, and I don't think they're related at all.)

Good luck! And don't sweat it -- totally common and normal for kids to be wet at night into the tweens.

Jori, I think that it's just different for all of them. I have one kid who will get up and potty on his own at night and my DD won't! She'll hold it! :faint:

Andrew just stopped wearing pull ups at night this week. It has probably been a month since he had a wet pull-up when he woke up in the morning. I still have a waterproof pad under his bottom just in case though!

Have you talked to him about it? My two told me they did not want to wear them anymore, so, we went with it and have only had one, maybe two accidents, but both times, they were either sick or we were up/out way past bed time and they just crashed.

Bella has been dry at night for almost 3 years....but Rissa is just starting to wake up most mornings dry. She sleeps with me & I have a feather bed on top of my mattress....it can't be cleaned & a waterproof pad won't fit over it. I am going to make sure she is dry for at least a month before we go without a pull up. If she were in her own bed I would let her sleep without the pull up now since she is dry almost every night. If I were you...I would get a waterproof mattress cover & let him try to sleep in undies as long as he is comfortable. If wetting the bed agitates him, I would put him back in pull ups & wait a little longer. Good luck!

After a week of dry nights I'd try just underwear. Jessy has been wearing panties for a while now and hopefully Jazz will be not far behind. Jessy still has an accident every once in a while when she is sick
