My twins had thier 4month check up thismorning-

    Baby boy is 11lbs 2oz, 25inch
    Baby girl is 11lbs, 6oz, 25inch
Baby boy did not gain any weight in 3 weeks,( took them in for being sick) and Baby girl gained 3oz, the doc says shes concerned about him not gaining weight, so i have to take him back in 4 weeks to get weight checked. Also neither of them are rolling over either way yet, and shes said if they are not rolloing over in the next 3 weeks then they have to go to " early intervention"- anyone know what this is and what do they do? I thought that they didnt really start to roll over till about 5 months or so?? Then she said that because christopher talks alot and Abby hardly any that Abby might have to go to intervention for that, she said if shes not chatting alot by 6 months- im like hello, she talks, just not all the time. It seems this doc is **** bent on sending my kids to " intervention". She said and i quote " With twins its inevitable that they willhave to go to " intervention" for somthing at some point".
So nows shes got me worried that somthings wrong with them or going to be, i thought they were perfectly normal happy babies??

    Hi,

How annoying that your doctor worried you like that! Early Intervention is a federal/state program to help "at risk" kids develop appropriately. Many twins qualify for Early Intervention because they're born premature or are low birth weight. The programs are run through the state, and there are usually several service providers in each area. Your insurance will pay for this; you pick a service provider, they come to your house and evaluate your kids and determine if any services would help them develop better/faster/more age appropriately. Sometimes they recommend physical therapy, speech therapy, or other services. In general I think Early Intervention is a good thing, because why not get special help and extra services if it will help your babies grow, right? Having them evaluated doesn't mean there's anything wrong or that there will be anything wrong in the future.

I'm surprised that your doctor though that not rolling over by 4 months would mean they needed Early Intervention services. Just from reading the boards here it seems like most twins don't roll over by 4 months. Mine are about a week younger than yours and they certainly aren't rolling over. They don't look like they're going to do it anytime soon either. (Mine weigh just about the same as yours too)

Good luck... and push back on that darn doctor if you think your kids are fine and don't need Early Intervention. You're the mom and you know best!

What a stupid comment. I think it's more likely because in general twins are born earlier, but still it's not a rule of thumb. My twins were born full term and are doing fine. I know singletons born full term and they go to early intervention (mostly boys with speech problems).

I agree you should keep an eye on their weight, not gaining is not good, so I guess an extra weight check is inevitable.

In terms of rolling, my doc says that they should be rolling by 6 months (my oldest rolled both ways at round 5 months and so did my twins, but still in different ways, the girls front - back first and my boy the opposite). Actually at 4 months both my girl just rolled over front / back (1 day before 4 months) while my boy didn't roll until closer to 4 1/2 - 5 months. And at this point they do not require any early intervention. They're right on track.

It could be time to find a new doc ...

sorry but i think your ped is being extremely premature! my god, my daughter Arwen didn't roll over until she was 8 months old!! She is a perfectly normal healthy baby. also, Arwen hardly talked at all until she was about 10 or 11 months old and even then she didn't say much. Her sister was chatting away and she was very quiet. i realize now that she was just absorbing and taking it all in because now she doesn't stop talking. Lorien has like only 10 words (although she babbles away!) and Arwen has like 40!

i would however as pp said, keep an eye on the weight thing but it doesn't sound like their weight is so far off?? i mean, he DID gain some weight but i guess i don't know enough about this one. did she give you any advice on how to get more calories in them?

you must feel awful :(. nobody wants to hear ANYTHING negative about how thier precious babies are doing. I hope everything works out ok. keep us posted and let us know how they are doing!!

I'm so sorry! If it makes you feel any better, one of mine didn't roll over until almost 5 months. It seemed to kick things into gear for him, too because he started rolling all over the place after that!

    that sounds ridiculous to me!

My girls did qualify for Early Intervention because they were premature, but they are certainly not going.
Unless there is a real problem, I can't imagine why.

It sounds like your babies are right on track to me. My girls have just started really rolling at 5 1/2 months. Ella is chatty but not Addison! And I'm not concerned at all.

i think it's time for a new doctor!

We have a Wiki article on Early Intervention, [Wiki]Early_Intervention_for_Twins[/Wiki], although I don't think that there is a cause for concern yet, simply because they are not rolling. As far as the weight, I have always had average to bigger size babies in the weight department, so I am not really sure on that.

Sorry but I think your dr is a little premature as well. I know we have a program here where they send out a survey and you fill it out and I did it for my guys for adj age 4months and they were fine. My DD rolled over around 4months but my DS did not do it until after his 6month appt. My dr was not concerned at all that he had not starting rolling yet felt that either he would or wouldnt no big deal.
They now both roll all over but have not started crawling altho my DD does go backwards yet my DS thinks he is Superman and flies on his belly.
The weight I could understand having to go back just as a double check but as far as the rolling I think the Dr is being very premature on all of it.
BTW - Mine were born at 34w3days so they were early and are developing fine.

I'm so sorry that your doctor is making you worry. About the weight thing, I think that getting a weight check in a few weeks is good, just to keep on top of it. As for the rolling, neither of mine were big rollers. DS was in physical therapy because of his torticollis and they weren't all to concerned about his rolling abilties. They worked on it with him, but never any need for concern. I also asked them about my dd who didn't roll over until 8 months! As for the "talking", that too will come, they are only four months old. My dd didn't start "talking" until about 8-9 months and now she has more words then her brother. If you feel they are doing good, then follow your gut and don't let the doc push you into something you don't feel they need. Every child is different. :hug99:

sounds like your ped is looking for things that aren't there...as for the growth - I don't know how big they were at birth but by 4.5 mos my DD was only 10.5 lbs (she was 3.5 at birth at 36w)...as long as they're eating and having enough wet/poopy diapers I wouldn't get wadded up over it...

My guys are 24 weeks and still not rolling on purpose. James has rolled from front to back by accident several times (but not lately) and Evan doesn't show any signs. Not worried at all.

:hug99: Sorry your pedi. scared you. It really doesn't sound bad, though. Babies develop so differently. Also, when did you deliver? Is 4 months chronological or adjusted age?

Try not to get too scared of Early Intervention - it's actually a terrific program. It doesn't mean that there's something wrong with your babies (certainly doesn't sound like it!), it's just a way of watching and making sure they're developing on track. EI comes to us every 4 wks (my twins were born at 34w and DS had very low birth weight), and I really look forward to the visits. It's all very low key. They come to your house and basically just play with the babies a bit. The nurse who visits us is great - friendly, knowledgable, supportive, very good with babies. (And an extra pair of hands if I'm in the middle of a feeding and someone needs a burp! B) ) I always enjoy talking with her and asking any questions I have. It's like having a second pediatrician - who makes house calls - for free! And that way I have constant reassurance that they're developing just as they ought to be.

My pedi was not at all concerned at their 4 month appt that they haven't rolled over (not consistently anyways or completely on their own). Our PT isn't even concerned. I think it is normal for them not to roll until even 6 months.
I would consider finding a new pedi if I were you. I don't understand why they would push early intervention on you just because they are twins. My pedi is the opposite and thinks they are pretty much normal and on target even when I am worried.

I have mini tiny babies, Sean gained 3 oz in one month and James gained 8 oz. My pedi was and is very concerned about their lack of weight gain. (He asks if I feed them. No, I lock them in the closet between visits.) As long as they are having enough poopy/wet diapers they are doing fine. They should also be developing some chub.

As far as the early intervention goes... are you sure we don't have the same pedi? Seriously, I mean that!

I don't know where you are in NC but I'm in Charlotte and have a wonderful pediatrician. Don't let her negativity get you upset, all babies are different and will do things in due time :hug99:
