I am 17 weeks 2 days! I really want to get a 3D u/s done soon and I called today to find out about one. The person I spoke to said that I should wait till I am at least 22 weeks. I don't want to wait that long but I want to get good pictures and really be able to see them good. Should I wait or go ahead and get one done at 19 weeks like I want to?

i got mine done at 28wks. they looked gorgeous! you can get them done earlier but they will not look as cute. here's a link to my 3D ultrasound in case you are interested in how they would look at a later gestation :)

They do look great!! I think that I will wait till 24 weeks but I don't think I can wait much longer than that.

I did mine at about 26 weeks and they weren't very good. All we saw was elbows and knees pretty much. They were already out of room.

Hey Samantha 83...with my last ultrasound at 17w3d they 'flipped on' the 3D during the 2D anatomy ultrasound. I had NO idea they were going to do that and was amazed. I had just found out they were girls and fell madly, head-over-heels in love with my blob-like babies (I think the babes look gorgeous and so sweet...they were actually spooning by the end of the appointment). Unfortunately I still have to scan the pics to computer, otherwise I would post for you to see.

For hubby and I it was a very unexpected major bonding experience. For the doc it was a practical medical thing she said she does routinely for her 'high-riskers'.

Does your MFM have the 3D ultrasound capacity...maybe you could ask them to 'flip it on' for bonding at your next appointment??

My doctor says they only do it for medical purposes. If they feel something is wrong with the babies. I really want to have the pictures and the dvd for keepsakes also. My next ultrasound won't be until I am 21 weeks and I want to know the sex of my babies soooo bad. That is another reason I want to get it done at 19 weeks.

there are reasons they're hesitant to do it unless necessary - here's some info on some of the negative side effects that have been linked to the use of ultrasound. just food for thought.

She is not hesitant. She even said she would sign a release for me to get one done. She said my insurance will only cover a 3D u/s if it is necessary. I read the information you provided miss_bossy
and I looked up more information. I will be getting an ultrasound every two weeks maybe even more towards the end of my pregnancy. I don't think getting a 3D u/s is any more dangerous than a 2D u/s is.

I just had mine yesterday, was really disappointed as we couldn't see their faces, they didn't lay right, we got only 2 good pics, one with a hand next to her ear and one with a very squashed arm and shoulder. I am 27 weeks, and they also wouldn't do it earlier, they say it freaks some people out as they aren't developed enough before then, and they can look weird.

please don't get me wrong - i also had u/s every two weeks (mono/di girls) and believe that it's a very helpful & useful tool for pregnancy, when needed. i guess i'm just concerned at the routine use of u/s that seems to be happening these days, added to the fact that so few women are even aware that any risks at all have been associated with the use of u/s. i believe very strongly in a person's right to informed choice & was offering up the other side of the coin, so to speak. as i said, it was food for thought - if after thinking, you make the choice that is right for you, than i'm 100% behind that choice, even if it's different than the choice i would have made. :good:

My best ones were at my 20 week appointment. At 17 weeks they were able to get a lot of pictures and determine sex, but they were still so skinny they looked kind of skeletal. I mean, I loved getting them and it was awesome to see them- but even by a few weeks later they looked a lot less alien! lots of facial shots, one rubbing his eye, yawns, feet, etc. My 27 week ones were so-so...one baby couldn't really be seen and the other was smooshed enough that they just weren't that great.
