Hi all! I have a question. I am almost 32 weeks pregnant with di/di girl twins, and I'd like to ask the advice of anyone else having/had twins. I went to the doctor on Friday to have an NST (lots of BH contractions) and they also checked my cervix. The nurse said that I am dilating at all, and not effacing yet. By 32 weeks, shouldn't I be doing something at least? Or is this just a sign that these babies will be in there for a long time? When did you start to dilate? Any advice/stories would be great!

Plase don't take this as I am trying to have them early, I want them to stay in as long as possible- I just thought that my body would be starting to do something in order to prepare for labor.

I don't think you are alone - I think in many pregnancies (especially first pregnancies - is this your first?) the cervix stays closed and firm until closer to full term.

For my twin pregnancy I was dilated to 1cm at 28 weeks (it was my 2nd pregnancy, so not unusual to be dilated to a 1) - and I stayed at 1cm until I delivered my mono-di boys via c-section at 35w 1d.

I never dilated with my older DS until my water broke and I was started on pitocin. You just never know really how your body will respond to pregnancy. You could go to the OB next week and be 2cm dilated...and stay that way until 38 weeks!

    Good luck! :)

The last time I was checked at 36 weeks I was not dilated at all. My Dr said it didn't mean much; that I could still go into labor any time. As you can see though, I didn't!

Yes this is my first, and second :) I just don't know what to expect..I feel kind of discouraged because I would like to try for a vaginal birth, but if they don't come on their own then I don't think I can- right? The nurse said I'm completely closed..but can my water break even if I'm still closed?

Yes your water can break, and yes you can change overnight, don't worry :)

My water broke with both my kids, I never dilated past 1 with my ds and never dilated at all with my dd. I had 2 c/s because apparently my body doesn't labor (I wasn't even contracting after my water broke).

I'm still closed up tight as "fort knox" with these twins even having had 2 kids.

But I know of many many women who are closed up tight one day, and go into labor 24 hours later and have a perfectly fine vaginal delivery.

Keep them babies in there a few more weeks! :)

Be super thankful that you are not dilated yet! I was put on bedrest at 29 weeks 5 days because I started dilating. I have gone from fingertip to 1 1/2 cm in 2 weeks. Nothing super major, but I have history of PTL so dr's are being extra cautious. Anyways, I would definitely not start worrying yet. You have lots of time left for all sorts of cervical changes. Like the PP say you can go from 0 to 10 overnight.

I went through this. I was contracting like a mad woman. I think I was about 32 weeks my first trip to L&D and they showed all of my contractions but no cervical change. I was SO frustrated. By 36 weeks I was finally 50% effaced but still no dilation. If I didn't have them by c-section I was sure I'd never dilate ;) . I think everyone is different and you go at your own pace. Some women / pregnancies dilate prior to labor and others not till it really gets started. It will happen! :)
