30wk Peri Appt. Went Well - But ...

I just got back from my 30 wk us (we are 30wks. 4days). The babies are looking great. Our little girl (BABY A) weighs 3 lbs. 6 oz. and our little boy (BABY B) weighs 3 lbs. 9 oz. Truly the babies are doing wonderfully and everything else looks good as well - cervix still over a 4 etc..

I am a bit disappointed as our little girl has gotten her bum wedged into my cervix. The u/s tech said she looks comfortable and does not think she will move. From everything I have heard she still has some time to move around but the tech. said that having her backside wedged in like that makes her look pretty comfy and she doesn't think I have much hope. Our little boy is vertex so I guess we have that going for us which doesn't mean much as my ob. would take him breech if BABY A was vertex. I hate to complain about such a thing as we are so fortunate that they are healthy and I am healthy, but....

The peri. didn't say anything about the fluid levels and as a matter of fact was so pleased with things that he won't see me for 4 more weeks. I was curious about the fluid levels so I asked the tech on my way out and she said BABY A was 2.9 and BABY B was 4.5. She said this is totally normal and kind of waved me out the door. These numbers sound a little low to me - any thougths?

The peri also said they start NST's at 36 weeks unless there is some kind of concern i.e. high bp, gestational diabetes, growth discordance,etc... It seems to me most people that post have many more NST's much earlier.

Also, he is not seeing me back for 4 weeks which seemed like a bit of time to go by until my next growth scan. He said at that point they will probably not measure my cervix anymore. I do see my ob every 2 weeks; however, I would have imagined I would see the peri more often as well.

Anyway, I wish I could just be happy with the great weights and the beautiful babies we are going to be having vs. wishing so badly for a vaginal birth. We just do not have any family in the state we live in and I really am not looking forward to a c-section recovery while trying to care for two new babies. The truth of the matter is that I would rather "participate" more in the birth than the c-section allows for - in my opinion. I know that sounds terrible and weird but it is how i feel.

    Thanks for listening,
    Amy

You sound a lot like me when I was pg... I had b/g twins..good weights and fluids...the docs weren't really worried about seeing me too much... I didn't have NSTs until around 34.5 weeks.... My twins were transverse/vertex up until 34 weeks... Then baby A went from vertex to transverse. :( From there she kind of settled on her side, but with her butt/hip nested into my pelvis...at my 36week check up my ob/gyn said she was vertex (by a manual check) I said, "no way? she flipped again??" He checked me three times and said, "I've been delivering babies for 25 years and that feels like a head to me..." Well, I was elated, but skeptical...sure enough the next day at my u/s she was transverse...that was her butt/hip he was feeling. :umm: I'm not sure if my story is encouraging to you or discouraging...on the one hand my baby did flip after 30 weeks... but it was in the opposite direction from what you would like to see.... and I'm convinced that she never did flip again b/c all my u/s after that she was always in the same position. I did have to have a c/s....you are right in realizing that it really doesn't matter what position baby B is in if baby A is not vertex then you will have a c/s. The recovery wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I also had a 20 month old at the time... the doctor just left the staples in a few extra days to give me a chance to heal more.... and with the twins they let me stay in the hospital 5 whole days... I think they felt sorry for me!! The normal discharge was four days for c/s. Anyway I was doing the stairs in our house by 6 days ....And one week after surgery they took the staples out, and I felt much better. I still had aches and pains for awhile...but honestly they were pretty comparable to the aches and pains I had after having a 3rd degree tear with my 8lb vaginal delivery...the only difference was the location of the pain...and honestly while trying to deal with the messy clean-up after having a child I was much happier having the scar on my belly than down in that area! :FIFblush: Long term, I've had occasional achyness there...but no major issues.... you really can't even see the scar.

Glad to hear your babies are doing so well. I know it's hard when it looks like you may not get to have the delivery you envisioned. Whatever is safest for you all is best though (I know you already know that ;) ). That does seem odd that the peri doesn't want to see you sooner. You can always push them for more frequent appointments. I guess that depends on what all your OB does at your appointments. As far as the fluid measurements, even those can be somewhat inaccurate, depending on the babies' positions, etc. If your doctor is not concerned, then I wouldn't think you need to be. I'm not sure exactly what is normal. I remember at my last ultrasound where fluid levels were measured, the tech did 2 measurements for each baby. One was like 7 and 3. And the other was about 5 and 5-6. I have started having NSTs, but it may be different for mono/di twins? Every doctor seems so different on this. What has your OB said about NSTs? If you want them, just ask for them. If not, at least just make sure the babies' movements stay the same (do kick counts once in a while). Congrats on passing 30 weeks!

we started our NSTs very early because of growth discordance with mono/di twins and then gestational diabetes added to the necessity. We were told that 36 weeks was normal with twins w/o any other issues. I'm glad everything is looking good for the babies and there is still hope they will flip, mine have flip flopped multiple times a day up until this last week.
