Juliana has a horrible cough and sounds congested. She doesn't have much of a runny nose but I use the suction thing if I see any mucous. They both have diarehea and they both dont seem to want to eat much and have been spitting up after I feed them. I called the doc and he said he can't prescribe any medication. They both have urine in the diapers and I have been adding water to their bottles.
I also have a vaporizer that I bought at Walmart the other day but it doesn't seem to work that well. There room isn't very big and I don't notice any difference. I didn't even think it was on. Mu husband is going to stop at babys r us on the way home to get a better one.
Does anyone have any ideas that they used that helps? Especially with the cough?

Thanks as always for any advice!

Poor little babies! I feel so sorry for them because yes, unfortunately there is not a lot we can do for them. I put the Baby Vicks rub on their chests and backs and use a cool mist humidifier. I use the saline drops in their nose to help loosen and bring the mucus down and then suction it out. Not a lot we can do but just try and comfort them as much as possible.

Unfortunately there is anything you can give them to help them feel better. It is a cold and it just needs to run its course. You can however; run a humidifier, use saline drops in the nose, use a bulb syringe. The humidifier may help with the cough. Why are you putting water in their bottles? I would think the formula would sit better and is much more nutritious for them and serves the same purpose as keeping them hydrated. I also like the Vicks Vapor plug ins. But I am not sure if there is an age limit on those. Maybe you can ask your Ped about that. to all of you. I hope they feel better soon.

I thought adding an extra ounce of water would help prevent them from getting dehydrated since they both have diarrhea...

I would just stick to using formula unless your Ped tells you otherwise.

Ditto pps...if they are drinking their bottles, I wouldn't water them down. If they quit drinking and don't wet then you need to be concerned.

Saline drops before suctioning should help some with the drainage. The drainage will make tummies upset and sometimes can cause some diarrhea (mucousy poops). A humidifier should help some with the congestion and possibly elevating their cribs (put a couple of towels or blankets under the end of the crib where you put their heads).

I like Vicks Vapor Plug Ins too (like a pps) but not sure about an age limit on those.

What about putting them in a safe place in the bathroom while you take a shower? Get some nice steam going to loosen the phlegm.

I hope they feel better soon.

I found with my DS that putting baby Vicks vapor rub on his feet and then putting on socks really helped his cough. It was a tip from another mom. I have no idea why it works, but I've done it as well and it helps with my cough. I hope they feel better soon!

Both my babies have a nasty cold and my son throws up soon after feeding because of the phlegm in his stomach. My ped asked me to add water to his bottle so that the milk can settle and this seems to have worked because he stopped vomiting. I do not dilute the breast milk though.

Vicks on feet (in sleeper/socks) and on chest. Take a hot shower with baby in room (steam). Or just sit in the bathroom while you run hot water. I tend to put a pillow in the crib so that the baby is somewhat elevated (head side). Good luck. With colds you really have to just let them ride it out.

You can also have them sleep in bouncy seats (in the crib) to help with nasal drainage. Mine always seem to do better that way when they have stuffy noses. And I don't know if you're bf'ing, but my ped recommended putting breast milk in their noses to loosen up - the same purpose as the saline drops.

Poor babies and you. We are on antibiotics here, coughs, colds, the lot and have been for ages it would seem. Mine are bit older than yours though. At that age I was doing what you are doing. But we use saline spray - its much better. And make sure you really fill each nostril - that way they 'snot' it out. Not nice but more effective than the drops. If you stay with drops - again fill their noses - not just one drop - that wont do anything. We also put olbas oil on tissue next to their beds to help them sleep easier. Hope they fieel better soon. You can't do anything for the cough btw.
