2nd grade "specials"

I am just wondering what type of specials does your 2nd graders do and how often?
In first grade my girls had gym twice a week then once a week was art, music, Spanish, and library. This year they have gym three times a week, music and Spanish twice a week, and then art and library only once a week. My daughter has three specials in one day and two days only one special and my other daughter has two specials 4 days and one day only 1. I think it's great they have music twice and they still have everything else but am just wondering if other schools are like this too?

 

In our schools each week they have PE twice, music twice and art twice, library once and computer lab once. They have one special each day, but one day they do have double specials and have 2 of them, sometimes back to back. And then one day they have a special and library. The teacher takes them to computer lab one day a week as well.

 

The school I taught in had:

art, computers, music, gym and science---all once a week. This is for all K-5 grades.


A visit to the library once a week (not a special, but with the grade level teacher).



I wish we did gym daily! (In some states it is required).

 

Ours have pe, art, and music on a rotating schedule. They go in that order and you have 1 every day for 50 mins. They have 2 different recess sessions for 20 mins each (total of 40 mins of recess a day). They have library once a week. They have counselor once every 2 weeks.

We lost having a computer teacher this year, but most parents don't seem to consider it a loss. As best as I could tell, the kids just played computer games at the lower levels with her. Most of the parents couldn't stand her on a personal level and had a lot of trouble dealing with her.

My kids have PE and music twice per week, and media, art and computer once per week. I like the schedule for the most part except that one day each week they wind up having 3 specials in a day which seems like a lot. Also, my boys don't like the music class very much, they seem to find it boring. If they are going to have music twice per week, I think the music teachers should do more to engage the kids.

 

In second grade, the boys had PE 3 times a week, art, music, technology, and Spanish, each once a week. This year they have PE 4 times a week (one time is teacher run), and music and art once a week. Technology and Spanish are taught by the regular education teacher (Spanish through a video program), as a result of the $1.2 million cut from our budget by our "wonderful" governor.

 

Ally's in 3rd grade, and their specials are art, gym, computers, music, and spanish. It's only the 2nd week of school, so I don't think they have the schedule for each special figured out yet. She said they didn't have any specials last week.

 

All our specials (even in 2nd grade) were just one day a week. They had gym, art, music, computers and library. It's at the same given time every day. But they also got 2 recesses in 2nd grade.

 

My girls specials are also at the same time every day. I just don't understand how they fit in two (or 3 with my one daughter) with in the time frame that they have given (I got a schedule sent home from both teachers showing what their days are like with times). I think my girls also go to the computer room too but not sure if that is a special type thing or if they are good or what. I know they went a few times to the computer room but not sure how regular they went in 1st grade.

 

My girls are first grade, but the specials are the same for every grade at our school. 40 minutes a day. PE is required 2x a week, but the others just rotate, which is art & music. Media & Counseling are also in the schedule on a rotating basis (one month is media, one month is counseling). Computers are in every class, and they are included in their centers. I wish we had PE every day, Spanish, and a longer lunch/recess (we get 20 minutes of each).

 

Our schools have a 6 day schedule (also if there is a snow day or holiday they don't miss anything) Connor & Maddie have phys. ed, library, art, music (vocal) and 2 days of computer lab in their rotations. All of the "specials" teachers except computer lab come to our school from other schools so they each have different gym and art teachers because they have them on different numbered days.

Day 1- Art
day 2- computer lab
day 3- library
day 4- phys. ed
day 5- computer lab
day 6- music

 

Our specials start in 1st grade and are art, music, PE, library & computer. Each are once a week. They also get 2 recess's a day which seems weird to me.

 

PE, Art and Music are every 3rd day. Spanish, Computer and Library are once a week. We also have Read-A-Louds (parent comes to class and reads) and Reading Buddies (Older classes read to the younger classes) once a week. Organic Gardening is usally open during lunch time, and once a week for a class trip.

 

At my girls' school there's a 3 day rotation of gym, art, and Spanish. They go library once a week and music once or twice a week, I'm not exactly sure. They also have a computer lab, but mostly there's a computer cart that the teachers use whenever they have a need for the computers.

 

Our grade 2 have PE mon wed fri. French Mon Wed Fri and Science same slot Tue Thur. They only get breaks through the day 20 minutes to eat and 20 minutes outside so I'm glad they get PE 3 times a week. Oh Library once a week

 

Our grades pre-k to 3rd have the same rotation - PE, music, library and health. They rotate days every 9 weeks. Each 9 weeks they have one of them twice a week. Example: Brianne has PE twice a week and Hayley has health twice a week this 9 weeks. Next 9 weeks the days they have each special will change. I don't like it because we always have to worry about gym shoes. There is also one day a week that they have 2 specials (the teacher has a planning period then). 4th and 5th grade have the same specials but they don't rotate them. On the fifth day they have the option of having choir or go to the gym. Everyone also has computer lab once a week but it is not considered a special. No foreign languages or art here. Art is done in the classroom. Looks like no one else has health.
