2cm dilated at 31 weeks

Hi there,

I'm actually posting this about a good friend who's 31 weeks with frat. girls. (I had ID boys last year at 38 weeks, but have since forgotten *everything* I remember from the expecting days ).

She went in for a routine u/s yesterday, but they noticed that her cervix had shortened and when checked she was dilated to 2cm. She's currently in the hospital under observation. Did anyone else experience anything similar? What are her chances of carrying them close to term?

I don't know statistics, but do know I was 1cm dilated at 30 wks, then 4cm dilated at 33wks, & am STILL pregnant (but was on bedrest from 30-36 wks & Nifedipine from 30-34 wks). My friend dilated to 4cm at 30 wks & carried her girls until 34 wks (on hospital bedrest). I think it depends upon the woman, the body, & the babies. My Baby A is breech, which is why I truly believe I've been able to carry so long. But it's hard to say. The babies come when they want to!!!! LOL...

It's different for everyone, but I wish your friend lots of luck! I was 1 cm at 27 weeks, 2 cm at 32 weeks adn delivered at 34 weeks when I was 4 cm and 100% effaced

 

i was 2 cm at 28 wks, placed on bedrest for 8 wks. i maintained at 2 cm for a that entire time.

 

I think that if they are so cautious as to have her in the hospital then maybe she has a pretty good chance of holding them in for awhile longer. My cervix was at a 2cm at 35 weeks. I made it to 37wks 5 days when I had my c/s scheduled. I think you mentioned that her cervix had thinned.. I think if it's really, really short this can be a worse sign than even the dilation... so it's kind of hard to judge... if she's 50% effaced, I'd say she has a good chance of hanging in there for a few more weeks at the least. If it's 90%, then I'd be a lot more skeptical about things holding out too long.

 

I was a finger tip at 31 weeks, 2 cm at 32 and 33 weeks, 3 cm at 34 and 35 weeks, 4 cm at 36 and 37 weeks and 4 1/2 cm on the day I was induced at 38w2d. I had a prior pregnancy (with a heavy child) and a d&c so my doc was not necessarily surprised that I started to dialate at 32 weeks. My babies also measured 2 weeks ahead at 30 weeks (4lbs5oz and 4lbs6oz), and they were born big. I never felt one single contraction. I think the weight did most of the job.

 

Like the others have said, everyone is soo different is it hard to say but I can share my experience in that at 29 weeks I was under 2cm in length, 2cm dilated, 80% effaced, funneling with a bulging bag, contracting every 2 minutes.............with bedrest and meds I was able to carry the babies until 36 1/2 weeks and they didn't spend a moment of time in the NICU. All I am trying to say is it is possible, even probable that she can go the distance!

 

I was 1cm at 31 weeks when baby A had PROM'd. They wanted to keep them in there one more week, but she was in danger of proplapsing her cord so they delivered me. I was also contracting so I guess I probably would have dilated more had I stayed PG.

Did they give her steroid shots? I had my first round at 24 weeks, but they gave me a rescue dose 48 hours prior to delivering.

 

I was 2 cm dilated from 31 weeks on and I didn't deliver until 38 weeks!! No bed rest, I actually did step aerobics the night before my water finally broke...You just never know! Keep hanging on!

I was 2 cm and 80% effaced at 33 weeks having contractions I didn't feel. I went straight from a regular OB appt to the hospital. This was on a Tuesday and the OB's goal was for me to make it to Friday to give the steroid shots time to take effect. At 34 weeks, I was the same. By 36 weeks, I was 4 cm and 90% effaced. The OB figured I'd be back that night. Well, I ended up being iduced at 38 weeks. You just never know!
