I'm almost 20 weeks and am pregnant with what we think are di/di twins. I've mentioned it in a couple of other posts, but have had 2 very traumatic m/c's over the past year and have never been this far along in a pregnancy! So... I have some questions...

We took fertility meds to get pg. and had a mod. amount of Ovarian hyperstimulation and at our last ultrasound my ovaries were still very large... my question: what kinds of aches and pains are normal with a twin pg. at 20 weeks? All of the sudden I have awful pain on both sides-especially when laying down at night.. can't tell if it's just normal growing pain or not.. also have crazy groin pain... between these two symptoms and the frequent peeing I am getting up anywhere between 5-8 times per night!!! I know the babies just recently had a growth spurt, and the discomfort always gets worse when they grow... though, I know growing is a good sign!!! We have our anatomy scan appt. a week and 1/2 away and I keep reading about cervial shortening starting around 20 weeks.. are there any signs or symptoms that I should be looking for?

I'm trying so very hard to stay positive and enjoy the pg. but I think because of our history I sometimes have hard time differentiating between when I should be worried and when I should not be!

    Thank you so much!

I probably won't be of much help since I have absolutely no experience with fertility treatments. I will however still add my .2 cents.

This is my 3rd pregnancy. Di/di twins. So far nothing is different from my other two pregnancies in regards to aches and pains. The only time I have any aches is when I cough. If I'm not careful with my abs they'll stretch something awful and ache and sting. That sting is on the side of my uterus. I manage by putting my hand on that spot when I cough.

Other than that and stronger morning sickness (started earlier and was worse) nothing's really different. For a while I was bigger than with my girls but now I don't feel that much different.

Hi there!!! I totally understand the fear aspect, expecially when you've have m/c's. I've been there and done that. Try and relax b/c you are not doing yourself and the babies any good. The groin pain and sharp pain you may feel at the front of your vagina are likely ligaments stretching as the babies grow. I used to feel as though my pelvis was splitting in the front. In some ways it is b/c when you are pregnant you release hormones that loosen your ligaments to make way for growing baby. Pillows like the snoogle have REALLY helped me. It'll get better, at least it did for me. Good luck :youcandoit:

No advice, just wanted to send some 's (I know it's hard not to worry) and wanted to say that if you are worried, call your doctor.

Hi and congrats on your twins!!!! I'm having twins after IVF treatment, so I understand the swollen ovary stuff! I'm also 20.5 weeks...woohoo to us! I'm having A LOT of aches and pains with this twin pregnancy compared to my singleton pregnancy. Yes, my side KILLS me at night (from the middle of my back to the middle of my belly), not to mention my back hurts so much more this time around. My peri said it's just the rapid growth from the twins causing me so much more discomfort this time. If this is as far as you've ever gotten in pregnancy, I imagine it would even be worse because you're just stretching that much more. I feel like a HUGE wuss, b/c I managed my first pregnancy (though I had tons of complications) pretty well physically at least.

I have my cervical length checked every other week by u/s due to my irritable uterus that causes me to have contractions...so far so good, but I get really nervous too. Have they checked your cervical length recently? Maybe they would be willing to monitor it more closely due to your losses.

I have found that putting a pillow length-wise under my back/side at night does help the side pain some...but I'm still up changing postions at least every hour or more. Eeek, and we have (God willing) a LOOOONG way to go!

Hi - congrats on your pregnancy. I'm with you on both the m/c and the fertility stuff - so I know how it feels to be where you're at and never know when it's ok to let down your guard and just enjoy your pregnancy. All the pains you're describing sound very familiar and normal to me. I wouldn't think that the hyperstim would still be a problem at this stage, that instead sounds like just ligaments stretching. I'll second the suggestion for the pillows - I think by my third trimester I was sleeping with a total of 6 pillows propping and supporting me on all sides, I started with just a couple and as the weeks went on there were more and more pillows added to the bed. But - that aside - I'd still say that if you're worried, then call your OB. Hopefully your OB knows your history and is willing to humor you with a little more attention than other people might ask for. Mine definitely was - he always told me to call any time if I had any concerns or questions.

Again - congrats on your pregnancy!

Thanks so much for all of your reassuring replies!!! Every time I talk to someone who has not experienced a twin pg. they will say that I should call the doc immediately and I feel really alarmed.. I feel so much better hearing about twin pg. experiences- which seems to be such a different "ball game" with the symptoms!

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

I conceived via IF tx too, and experienced OHSS with this pregnancy. So much of what you described is very familiar to me. My ovaries hurt for a very long time - I think they were finally settling down around 20 weeks. Pregnancy doesn't allow them to recover from OHSS as they normally would, so you get to deal with additional pains :(

You are probably also dealing with ligament pains and your pelvic bones starting to stretch / separate. I'll be honest and tell you I have had this my entire pregnancy - but much worse earlier on. Do not hesitate to tell your OB or peri about these pains so they can check it out and make sure all is normal. They will also be doing cervix checks at some point to make sure it's nice and long.

You've come a long way to be pregnant, so your anxiety and worries are so normal -- fall back on your medical team to put you at ease, that is what they are there for, and enjoy every moment of this pregnancy, you deserve it :)
