How old were your twins when they got their first two wheel bikes? Did you buy them new or did they inherit them from their older siblings? Any purchasing suggestions?

Annie just took her training wheels off this spring. All of her bikes her hand me downs until she got a bike for Christmas. BUT...she rides her old bike with the seat as high as it goes with no training wheels because the new bike is too big for her to get on (at this point) whithout training wheels.

As soon as she manages the bigger new bike, the older smaller one with the training wheels back on will go to Joey who has figured out how to pedal her tricycle.

You know, I just posted this question to my local multiples club. My boys just turned 3. It seems a lot of the twins in my group have been on 2 wheel bikes (with training wheels) starting between age 2 and 3.

We just went looking at TRU yesterday and we are getting 14" bikes for the boys (they are tall for their age). It fits them now and they can grow into a little bit. These are my only kids so they don't have bikes to inherit.

    Good luck!

Mine rode their tricycles until their 4th birthday--then they got bikes with training wheels. Jon started riding without training wheels last February (he decided one day he wanted to ride a 2 wheeler and accomplished it in 30 min!). This spring we got him a 20" bike, because he outgrew the 16" that he had (he is over 4 ft tall). Marcus is still riding the 16" with training wheels. The lady at the bike store told me to make sure they are really good at riding the bike without training wheels and that they look HUGE on the bike before moving up. She said, in her experience if you don't wait for those 2 things, they have a hard time with the bigger bike. We are glad we listened because Jon had no problem adjusting to the bigger bike!

I was sorta hoping to avoid training wheels myself. We still have trikes. Ali is still a little lazy on the pedaling front, so we have work to do on that part! My parents said they got us small bikes that would allow us to put our feet down to stop, so we learned to balance quickly and never had the training wheels. I like that idea a lot! I have a feeling that Ali wouldn't ever get out of training wheels at this point!!

We are still on trikes. We went to a friends house this weekend who had a bike with training wheels for her son and both boys took a turn at riding it. Slaton did great...Camden not so much. Camden is still too "wild" when he drives and the bike tipped over with him several times. Slaton got on the thing and took off like a champ.

My boys got their bikes last spring just before they turned 3 and have been riding like pros for the past 2 summers. They love them. We got the cheapo ones from Wal-Mart .. I think they're called Rock-its.
But they still have the training wheels on them .. maybe next summer we'll try them without. :)

    Found a link .. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=1985714

Mine are on trikes, and they are 5.5. They are, however, exceptionally short, only the size of the average 3 yr old. I don't get my kids bikes until they can ride 20-inch wheels (my boys were 6), because we don't have sidewalks and they need to be visible over the hood of a car, IMO.

Very similar for us, went from trikes to big bikes/no training wheels (as far as I could tell they don't make training wheels for the size bikes we were given) at about 5 1/2.

We got bikes right before they turned three. They are Trek Jet's from a bike shop. The trikes we had were too small and so we were going to either purchase bikes or new trikes. We opted for bikes and are pleased with our decision. They love to ride them!

I hadn't thought of this. That's really smart!

Has anyone heard of balance bikes? They are two-wheel bikes without any pedals -- and they're small, so kids learn to balance and propel themselves with their feet. I've heard that learning to ride on these first will allow you to skip the training wheel stage, because the balance has already been learned....

Most balance bikes are very small, made for the average 2-year-old. My 4-year-old is exceptionally tall -- 45 inches -- so I'm considering getting her a Trek Float, which is a regular bike, except you can easily remove the pedals, thus using it as a balance bike....and then put the pedals back on when the kid can ride.

She's not particularly coordinated, so I'm thinking this will be the best way for her to learn -- I've been reading about this for awhile!

(If anyone is interested, check out the Baby Bargains message boards for more info on this.)

We ended up buying a bike like this, only it's a Spiderman theme. We found the bikes at a different store for $36.00. The bikes we bought.
My boys are short for their age so we ended up getting a size 12. We live next to a walking/biking path that leads to a park. My boys won't be riding on the road for awhile. These were a good deal considering how fast they will probably out grow them.
    Thanks for all the replies!

Those are perfect ! Did they get to ride them yet ? How did they do ? :)

Fwiw .. mine wont be riding anywhere NEAR the road ! We live on a "fast" street where the cars ZIP past our house.

Michelle-They did get to ride them before supper tonight. Eli did really well, only having a problem going up the slight hill of our driveway. Max got a bit frustrated. I think he was hungry & hot. We'll try it again tomorrow.

My oldest got his 2 wheeler (with training wheels) on his 2nd b-day. He could ride it but wasn't really interested until closer to 3. Now he is a pro zipping around without his training wheels! :) :) The twins are now 2, but they are not interested in the 2 wheel bike at all.

The boys got 2 wheel bikes (12" frames) with training wheels shortly after turning 3. It was an easy adjustment from pedaling/riding on their big wheels and trikes. They ride their bikes almost everyday in our driveway since. We bought them at Toys R US. Most small frame bikes are around $50. If you can find them at a consignment sale or from a friend...GREAT! They outgrow them fast...within a year.

Since our boys are very tall, they had to move up on bike size this year (their knees where hitting the handle bars). We got them 16" inch bikes with training wheels for their 4th b-day. This past weekend at the lake house, we practiced on their older cousin's bike WITHOUT training wheels. They did pretty good but I need to practice more with them at home. I think most kids can ditch the training wheels by age 5.

My boys have the big bikes with taining wheels... we got them in January. They have already wore them out. Also they are the 12 inch ones and aren't big enough, so we are buying them the next size up this week.

Mine got balance bikes for Christmas when they were 2.5 years and it took some time but when they were 3.5 they were and are pretty much pros at riding those and gliding with their feet up. Both of them can go pretty fast on those and we take bike rides around our neighborhood with them.

We were given a 14 inch two wheel bike which we took the training wheel off and my ds can actually pedal it a bit. We are pretty sure he could ride the two wheel bike without the training wheels if it was a larger size up so a more natural pedal motion as the 14 inche bike he's really cramped on it. But for the time being we aren't quite ready for him to just take off on his own  Our plan is to give them two wheel bikes without training wheels for Christmas.

Jamie, how tall are your boys? My boys just turned 3 and are 37.5" tall. I just brought home 14" bikes and they barely reach the pedals with the seat at its lowest and can't touch the ground as they straddle the bar. I was going to take them back and get 12". Now I'm wondering...

Mendy, sounds like they need 12' bikes. My kids are almost 40 inches and have a hard time on 16" bikes.
