All of a sudden, our DS has started twitching/shaking for a 3-4 second intervals during naps. This has scared us but couldn't recall if our 4 yr old son did this as a newborn.

I know babies make all sorts of faces, contort the face, and do everything under the sun. It's just that this little burst of activity 'appeared' to be more of a VERY SLIGHT mini seizure......

Is it possible it was just a dream? Is this normal?

    Thanks.

I do remember them twitching a fair bit, their nervous systems are quite immature when they are first born. I would mention it to the ped when you see him/her, though, hopefully they can reassure you.

Both of my babies had this for the first month or so...my pediatrician said it was just immature nervous system. But definately ask, I was worried too!

It sounds normal to me, I remember I couldn't have the babies in the room with me if I wanted to sleep b/c they made so much noise! If you're concerned though I would call your pedi and just ask them about it. Maybe they could give you a better idea of "normal" things babies do in their sleep versus seizures.

Is it the startle reflex? It sounds normal to me, but of course ask your ped for reassurance as Tina mentioned.

I agree it's either their startle reflex or immature nervous system. Mine would tremble while awake and our ped also said it's because of their nervous system. And it really doesn't matter if they were 8 wks early or on time, when babies are born their nervous system hasn't finished developing, it does that outside the womb.

I would suggest catching it on video.....my son would choke while nursing and I knew that it wasn't right, after catching it on video, the doctor was better able to "see" what I was talking about and we ended up having to see a feeding specialist and everything. I would totally try to catch it on video and show it to the doctor.

It's totally normal. I know exactly what you're talking about and all four of kids have done it. It's related to an immature nervous system and babies usually outgrow it within a few weeks.
