2 Naps to 1 Nap

My b/g 10mo olds are wonderful sleepers and had been great nappers till last week! We had been getting good night sleeps from 730pm-630am and two naps at 930am and 130pm (about 1.5hours each). Fortunately the night sleeps have continued but the naps have shortened or just changed. They sleep in separate cribs but are in the same room. There is a small less than 1foot at the end of their cribs where they can see each other when they are awake and both in the right spot. I put them down "drowsy but awake" and usually within 5mins of each other with no trouble. Now lately, they are up and standing in their cribs and end up crying until I go in, pick them up for a couple of minutes, and then put them back down. What I have started doing is putting the first baby down and (if all goes well) 10mins later once 'asleep' I can put the other baby down but sometimes they both end up awake, standing, and crying!! And, if they sleep a total of 3 hours (two 1.5 hour naps) in the day I'm lucky.

A couple of thoughts I am wanting your help or opinions on...

Is this just a phase that comes with increased/new mobility? How long can I expect it to last?
Do they need some toys in their cribs to occupy them? What type of toys are approriate?
Are they just telling me they really don't need so much daytime sleep...and are ready to drop to one nap per day?

This has really thrown me for a loop this past week and I need advice. Thanks!

I am wondering if my 10 month olds b/g babies (actually only my boy!) are showing signs of only wanting one nap. For the afternoon nap he seems so wired and it takes some time to get him to go down. Both babies were always so good for sleep and naps. In the past month he has sat learned to sit up, pull up, cruise around, and crawl so he has been busy!! Perhaps it's just a phase...but he loves to stand in his crib and cruise the perimeter and one day he did that for 30mins before he starting crying.

Anyhow, at what age did your babies drop from 2 naps to 1 nap and how did you know it was time?

We went from 2 to 1 at 18 mos. There were many times that I would have sworn to you that they were trying to go to one, but I remained consistent (while tweaking the times a bit!) and they kept on napping. Don't be in a hurry to give it up!! (not that you are!)

It's likely that with all their new activities they are just practicing and that is their focus in the world. (In fact, I think my Touchpoints book says just that) Keep with the program and they'll get back into their naps. I would also just possibly adjust the times a bit. 10-15 min. for timing can make a big difference!!

    :hug99: Good luck!! :hug99:

We went to one nap at 16 months, there were many weeks where they didn't nap well but I stuck with the two naps until they CLEARLY (over a month of not napping during the 2nd nap) didn't need it. I would give it a while.

Is this just a phase that comes with increased/new mobility? How long can I expect it to last? Yes, I believe so it was the same for us. I don't remember how long but I did have to CIO for naps, mine only napped for about an hour each time and I just decided the time was short anyway and I did not go back in once I put them up. Eventually they either cried for 10min or so or started to play/talk for a while our setup is the same as yours.

Do they need some toys in their cribs to occupy them? What type of toys are approriate? At 10 months they had a lovey bear which they still have and I have spares and a small teething dog and frog. I also just started with a blanket at that age.

Are they just telling me they really don't need so much daytime sleep...and are ready to drop to one nap per day? Mine dropped their second naps at 19 months and I knew because they would laugh/play etc. the entire time after a few days of no actual second nap I stopped them. I would think they still need two naps at 10 months it's probably that they are going through seperation anxiety which usually creeps up around that time. GL!
