I have twin boys who are 10 weeks old, this is my first post. I love reading this site daily, and I finally feel concerned enough to ask a question. My boys are FF the isomil formula. One of the two has a very difficult time pooping. When he does finally poop it is not hard, but he works on pushing it out and during that time he screams in pain. He is very red faced. I told my pedi and he prescribed lactulose (sugar) for one bottle a day and it is not helping. My questions are - is this normal, and is there anything I can do to help his discomfort?

When my girls were constipated we would replace 1 ounce of the water in their bottle with pear juice. It helped.

I had the same issue with one of my two boys also. He'd scream and cry and be ultra fussy until he actually had his bowel movement. My Pediatrician said to remember that these little guys still have developing GI tracts, and that it's going to take a few months for them to get things working right. It worked out by itself, and C hasn't had this issue since he was 4 months. We didn't do anything differently, other than trying to help him work it out by doing bicycle legs and leg tucks.

This is also my first post but I read this site daily. I would recommend you call your pediatrician again to see if he or she will recommend an increase or the addition of pear or prune juice. When my guy was little, he suffered from constipation and our pediatrician recommended adding prune juice to his regular bottle of formula. It also may be the formula brand/type but before switching you will need to consult with your pediatrician. Good luck! It is really hard to watch them strain.

Congratulations on your babies & :welcome: to Twinstuff!

A bit of juice in the bottle will sometimes help if the ped okays it. But, if the poop isn't hard, they will usually work it out on their own as their digestive systems mature.

I would call your Ped and see if there is anything else you can do or give. We did 1/2 ounce pear juice to 1/2 ounce water once a day and that really helped. I hope they get some relief.

We are on the same formula as you and one of my boys has the same problem of straining to poop. I just called my ped. and they said that at this age they are still developing their muscles and GI tracts so there isn't much we can do for him right now. They said it should work itself out in the next few months. It is so hard to watch him go through this, he even spit up his bottle this morning because he was working so hard to pass a bowel movement.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this- it is heartwrenching to have to watch them struggle with something that should be so easy. Why are they on soy? If it is a milk allergy than technically they should be on the alimentum. One of our twins had constipation at first they said give her water- helped alittle but than she developed mucous and blood than they said okay it is a milk allergy-try soy- that made her constipated and she still was not right- I put her on alimentum and she is a completely different baby abd hardly ever crys now. I would not accept your peds answer- no infant should cry when they poop. Our other twin also gets constipated but she is not allergic so she is on regular advanced. But once a day i put 1 oz of prune juice in her formula and than if she goes more than 2 days without a BM i give her 1 oz of water with 1 gram of miralax. This regimen has prevented her from having hard painful stools although it has not helped with the frequency of BM's but i do not worry about this because she is a happy baby and no longer cries when she poops either. Just so you know though miralax is not approved for infants it is off label use and i did talk to my ped about it first. I am actually thinking about switchng her to alimentum also because the ped said that alimentum always causes loose stools- he said it wasn't worth the cost- but i'm not sure about that!!! I do hope things get better for you and your boys-
