It's been about 10 days since my girls had their 1 year shots. They both had fevers a couple of days following the shots. Now, one of my girls has a rash all over her chest and on her face. How do you tell if it's from the MMR or the chicken pox vaccine? From looking info up on the internet, it seems like the reactions are very similar.

My boys had both of these shots at 1 year. Got the same fever and later a rash. Never knew which one caused it, but they were fine in a couple of days. Didn't seem to bother them...

    Good luck!

I guess my biggest concern is that I was around an adult yesterday who has never had the chicken pox. So, if we are contagious with chicken pox, I will feel horrible! [IMG] It really looks more like a rash though. Aren't chicken pox more identifiable? This just looks like a big cluster as opposed to single bumps.

My boys had the chicken pox vaccine at 12 months and the MMR shot at 15 months. Adam had a fever and a rash all over after the MMR. From what I've heard (and I don't know how reliable this is), the chicken pox rash will have itchy bumps mostly on the chest and stomach that look like pimples and can erupt with fluid. The measles rash that Adam had after the MMR showed up exactly 10 days after the shot. It was a dense rash with small red bumps everywhere (face, chest, back, arms, legs) but they didn't itch. The rash went away after 4 or 5 days.

While the live virus used in the chicken pox vaccine is slightly contagious, it is very very rare that someone can contract chicken pox from it. (I got this from the CDC data sheet they gave me when the boys were vaccinated). Remember that it's a weakened virus so it's not going to spread the way regular chicken pox would.

Mine had a rash of small pink bumps all over their chests and I'm sure it was the MMR that caused it. The timing was about the same as what you describe. The rash didn't seem to bother them at all and only lasted a couple of days.

I had chickenpox as a teenager so I do remember what it looked like and the bumps are larger and very, very itchy. HTH!

Sounds like maybe just a rash as a reaction to MMR to me. My girls had Chicken Pox vac at 15 months. About 14 days after the shot, Reagan had what looked like a few "bites" on her. We had no idea what it was. Thought it was a spider bite until a few more showed up. Washed everything in the nursery hoping it wasn't bed bugs or something, we had no clue. It wasn't until I thought about the vaccine and woops, it might be chicken pox. She had a fever for just a few hours that went away with Motrin and she was fine other than that. Her pox (which she only had about 6 of) were on her face and chest. They looked like bug bites and then got whiteheads on them (like pimples) adn then crusted over and dried up. I kept her from the sitter's for a few days (until they were all dried) just precautionary, but we were told at urgent care that she was more than likely NOT contagious.
