Ok so I brush my kids teeth with water every night. My doctor said to not use toothpaste till they are like 3! And tonight JDs gums started bleeding! Has this happened with anyone else? Amberlynns teeth are ok. Do I need to take them to a dentist or atleast start using toothpaste?? I'm scared to brush his teeth now!

I strongly suggest you to find a Pedi dentist for them. We don't have bleeding issue. But normally if gym bleeds when brushed, that means unhealthy gum. I never heard of brushing teeth with water only after 1. Since my twins turned 1, we started brushing their teeth with infant toothpaste (without flouride). Before 1, we brushed with water. And we also take them in Pedi dentist very 2 months for cleaning and flouride wipe. Their dentist een recommend to brush every meal and floss everyday. We just don't floss that often. They scream bloody murder everthimg we brush so don't even think about floss

Hope the bleeding issue just happened once. But really you need to take them to Pedi dentist. I strongly suggest Pedi dentist not regular one. Good luck! I know many parents delay on taking their kids to dentist bc of the cost. But it's not that expensive. after insurance, we pay nothing. Good luck!

mine only have 5 and 6 teeth (willa grace has 1 more than her brother) took them to a pedi dentist a couple of weeks ago. We were told to use infant/toddler toothpaste but just a drop, and that it was important that they drink tap water for the floride. We brush in the morning and at night and then wipe their mouths with water after they drink their milk before bed. I agree with PP bleeding gums are a sign of unhealthy gums for MANY reasons. Just for peace of mind check with a dentist

I think sometimes it might be that they just ate something that irritated their gums or had something stuck in their teeth. I've had my kids' gums bleed once in awhile. If it continues I'd worry, but just once isn't a big deal, I wouldn't think. I also use the non-flouride toothpaste with Spencer. And I alternate it with dipping a toothbrush in a child's flouride rinse and using that. It's a small enough amount of flouride that if he swallows it it won't hurt anything. I was given advice by our dentist to do that with Sabrina who got a cavity at 2 years old.

I am a dental hygentist, it could be a couple of things. It could be a tooth coming in if you are brushing his gums and there is no tooth where its bleeding, if its bleeding around a tooth it could be that something got stuck in his gums like a piece of food or it could be gingivitis but it so unlikely at this age. Not using infant toothpaste shouldn't matter but I do recommend finding a brand that contains xylitol, its a sugar substitute that has been shown to help prevent decay so until you can use flouride toothpaste we recomend that. The only brand I know of that contains it, is the aquafresh brand.

Don't be afraid to continue brushing even if its bleeding, keep brushing and you should notice that the bleeding stops after a few days, if it doesn't, then go see the dentist. However I do recomend having kids go to the best by the age of 2. It doesn't have to be a pedi dentist, a general dentist is fine. The general dentist will recomend a pediatric dentist if needed.

    Hope this helps.

My girls gums bleed when they are teething. They are the same age as your LO's and I found the molars took a LONG time to cut through completely which meant bleeding on and off for weeks. Before they were all the way through the tissue around where the tooth was erupting would bleed. My Dad is a dentist and I had him look and he confirmed that it was just the irritated tissue around where the molars were coming through. Also, I didn't start using toothpaste with my oldest until he was just over 3 and he could start to learn to "spit".
