Bedtime for us is around 7. They used to sleep until around 7, but now that it gets light so early, they keep waking up earlier and earlier - DD was up at 5:30 this morning, UGH!

There's no way to keep things dark enough (we're in a loft with 6' windows, will be moving to a house but not for at least a month). So I'm thinking about tweaking bedtime to get more sleep into these kids.

My question: how many hours do your sleep at night around this age (12-18 mo)? Is it still reasonable to expect about 12 hrs of sleep a night, or are they starting to grow out of that?

11 1/2 - 12 hours; my oldest slept 13 hours straight between 4 months and 2 years old (she was / is my best sleeper).

    Holly,

I'm lucky to get 11 hours out of my girls each night. They used to go to sleep without a fuss at 6:30pm and wake up at 6:30am on the dot. Now they don't fall asleep until 7pm or even 7:30 some nights and they're routinely up between 5:45am and 6am. They're pretty good nappers; 1.5 hours in the morning and 1.5 - 2 hours in the afternoon, so I figure they get about 14.5 - 15 hours of sleep a day total.

Mine have pretty much slept 12 hours at night since they were 6 months old, 7:30p-7:30am, give or take.

Mine sleep 10-11 hours....they are in bed by 7pm, but sometimes talk for up to an hour.

they wake up around 6:30 - at least that's when I hear them..it's possibly they wake up earlier.

I know Becca would sleep longer, but her 'morning person' brother wakes her up.

She is a good napper, he is a fair napper, but seems to have lots of energy, so i don't worry about it too much.

Mine are hit or miss with 12 hours. Most of the time they go to bed at 7:30 and are up anytime from 6:15-7am.

Good question. My boys have always gone 7-7 but have recently begun waking between 6-630. We have blackout shades but light still comes in through the window, and it's coming in earlier and earlier with summer here. I've been wondering if I moved bed time to 7:30 or 8:00 would it help them sleep a bit later... or would they wake up earlier (a la Weissbluth)??

Holly, what were you thinking in terms of "tweaking bed time" to get more sleep? Moving it up earlier or later?

We too usually get a max of 11 hours out of the girls, and that's been their norm for a while now! They do nap pretty well though(usually!)

During the week, one will go 11 hours, the other we're lucky to get 10. They both get 2 hour naps during the day. On the weekends, One will go 12-13 with a 2-4 hour nap (straight shot, not broken up) and the other we're still lucky to get 10 at night and ANYTHING during the day......

I read an article at the doctor's office today that said at 15 months our babies should be getting one good nap and 12-13 hours sleep each night. Not a chance! We usually get the one good nap, but only about 10 hours at night. They go to sleep anywhere from 9-10:30 (usually about 9:30) and get up from 7-8. (usually about 7:30). So on bad nights, we're looking at only 8 1/2 hours. :( I want to try to put them down earlier, but it is working as it is... I don't want to mess it up!

Mine are 12 hour a night sleepers on average, with a 1.5-2.5 hour nap during the day.

Ok, I am feeling greatful for once. They both go to bed at 7 till 7-8 in the morning (12-13 hrs) and then take 1 2-3 hr nap durring the day. I guess we are doing well?

I was thinking about trying to get them to bed a little earlier. (Easier said than done...)

Thanks for all the responses! It's nice to get a sense of what everyone else is doing. I'm glad that 12 hrs is not an absolute must at this age. For the most part, they're doing pretty well despite the early wake-ups. DD could use more sleep in the morning (and so could I :vava: ), but she makes up for it with naps.

But man oh man, I cannot WAIT to move and have these kids in their own bedrooms with blackout shades!!!

    Man am I jealous.

We used to do well with bedtime at 8 and wake up at 7 but now it seems bedtime has kind of shifted to 8.15/8.30 and I can hear them chatting for about 15 minutes. Wakeup has shifted and seems more often than not to be around 6.30 am. We leave them in their cribs until 7 / 7/15 ish but I wish it was longer.

Maybe I need to get them to sleep earlier. ugh.

They still do 2 naps though for about 3 hours total.

I can't even imagine life without blackout shades!

I think kids need about 14 to 15 hours of sleep at that age, on average -- so if they sleep less than 12 hours at night, then try to encourage it during the day....

Nadia did 12 hours at night, and one 3-hour nap during the day. She still does 12 hours at night now, but no longer naps.

My little ones do roughly 12 hours at night, sometimes 13. And, they take two 1.5-hour naps pretty consistently.

I'm sure it will get much better once they're in their own room, with darkening shades!

Unfortunately for me, my girls were never big sleepers. I would say that on average, since they started to really sleep through the whole night and even until now, they sleep about 10.5 hours at night. I have tried putting them to bed later and they only wake up earlier  . I have tried to put them to bed earlier and they will possibly wake up at the normal time for one day and then they just wake up even earlier the following days  I can't win with them. When they were the age of your twins, my girls slept 10.5 hours at night and 1.5 hours for naptime. So, only 12 hours total sleep. I'm so envious of those who have good sleepers. Lots of sleep just doesn't seem to be on my girls' agenda <_<

This is exactly our schedule. Sometimes they wake a little earlier and play for a bit, but its usually 8 to 7.

The twins still get 12 hours a night (they are 14 mo)

My DD also gets about 10-11 hrs a night and she just turned 3.

at that age they were going to bed around 6pm and waking around 7/8am, so 13/14hrs of sleep at night!!! Only recently have we switched bedtime to 7pm and they still sleep until 7:30am. And take a 2-3hr nap.

But I think it is the universe thanking me for the CONSTANT waking the first 11 months!!!!

We have blackout shades and mine sleep 12 hours a night and have about a 2.5 hr nap each day. HTH! GL when you move into a bigger house and can get blackout shades for your kids. I think it will prob help a lot.

Well, my almost 3 year olds sleep 7-7 for the most part but they do wake earlier some mornings.

I think they need more sleep at 12-18 months than they do at 3 years per say...
