Just got back from my 17 week ultrasound and the midwife, who has stated she is not an expert, but she still has not been able to see a membrane seperating the twins yet, and then she started to tell me all the risks(knots in cords, ect...) ... and i think ive read on here where sometime the membrane is very thin and thats why they cant see it. But all in all i had a good appt, the babies have good heartbeats and are moving around alot.

From what I understand, the membrane is pretty tough to find. They've only seen mine at my peri's office. My regular ob does u/s every visit, but she's never able to see it on her machine. Have you had an u/s at a peri's office? Their machines are usually a lot better than what the ob's office's have. Good luck! I hope they find that membrane for you!!

Did your midwife suggest you go and see a peri? They will be able to do a higher resolution ultrasound and hopefully they will find it.

I don't have any experience with not finding membrane, in fact- my little guys' membrane is very easy to see. But I agree with the others, I hear a lot of times it is there just hard to find!
I wanted to include a link to my last ultrasound pictures- the top one is of both heads with the membrane!

Don't get too worried, they could not find one on the first u/s for me, either. Once I had seen the peri and had those guys doing it they were able to and all was well...

Let us know and good luck!

i also had to go to the peri because they werent able to see a membrane between the girls. now you can see it pretty easily. i guess there is a window of time that it is easier to see than other times

If your twins are identical, the membrane can be much harder to find, since the membrane is thinner. We couldn't see the membrane at 8w, 12w or 20w. We saw it briefly, we think, at 16w. It's kind of scary, because in our case, the babies were different sizes, and they couldn't find the membrane, because they thought the membrane was "shrink-wrapped" around the smaller baby, and the smaller baby had no fluid. So, both are a concern, monoamniotic, or possible low fluid.... Now, we see a peri for the TTTS, and we can usually find the membrane, which is a good sign that both have fluid.

But it was VERY hard to see the membrane at all appts, and it's hard for the peri to find now. Hopefully they'll be able to find it at your peri's office!

Do they see two placentas? If so, then the membrane is there somewhere! If one placenta, then look at it this way, mo/mo twins have less of an incidence of TTTS, so there's that!
