15 Month Visit ?

Discussion in 'The Toddler Years(1-3)' started by Abby&Maddy'sMom, Jun 23, 2008.

One of the girls is now dropping weight since walking (oz. not pounds), and is falling off the growth chart for weight. Pedi recommended additional fats in her diet, like butter. Anyone have more practical advice, or even food recommendations ? I don't think adding oreos with breakfast is necessarily a good idea.

    Thanks

Use whole milk still and put butter on waffles and mini pancakes. Put cheese in eggs... a few things like that. I tend to think that these things will work themselves out! :hug99: Try not to stress over it!!

I'm not sure what you do for drinks other than milk, but maybe 100% fruit juice instead of water? It wouldn't add fat, but it would add some healthy calories.

ETA: We've always just done milk at meals and water every other time, but recently started finishing up meals with fruit juice. They still drink all the milk they would have anyway, but because the juice is something different at the end, they drink a little of it, too. So they're getting a little more liquid, and some more calories.

Ours had also dropped a bit on the growth charts at their 15 month appointment (they didn't lose, but they barely gained, and their percentages dropped), but the pedi said this is a common time for that to happen and not to worry. We'll see where they're at at 18 months before stressing over calories and fats!

Cheese, whole milk yogurt, smoothies, butter in mashed potatoes, avocado, extra snacks (morning and afternoon?).

One of my DD went up in weight percentile at 15 months and the other dropped down (born at 3rd, was up to 20th, then went back down to 10th). She was a 14.5 months walker so I think she had lost some of her chubs right before that appointment. Anyhow, our pedi suggested high fat yogurts, butter, whipped cream for cooking rather than milk, cheese and even ice cream. The girls eat what we eat for dinner, so I have tried to incorporate higher fat foods at lunch and for snacks. I make them smoothies with high fat yogurt (I found 10% mf), some whipped cream and fresh fruit (or I put in jarred baby food fruit) and blend it. Then I took two of their medela baby bottles and cut the tip off the nipple so that they could feed the smoothies to themselves. This has gone over really well. We also do lots of omelets as the girls love them and you can add all sorts of different veggies, cheese and even meats (as one of my DDs is not a big meat eater).

On a side note, I felt bad that she had dropped down and kind of stressed over it for a week. Then we went to my family doctor (previous appointment was with our pedi) as it was time for vaccinations. He repeated the height and weight measurements and when I mentioned that Cami was on the small side, he said that, yes, she is on the small side, but that a child following their height curve is a better indication of nutrition than the weight curve and she had perfectly followed her height curve so he wasn't worried. He said that they have found that malnourished children fall off their height curve and when they are supplied with proper nutrition they catch back up to their height curve - producing a staircase effect on their height growth chart. That made me feel better :)

Cabot makes a Greek yogurt -- both plain (in huge tubs) and flavored -- that is very rich and fatty. My two love it!

We have a bit different issues but still trying to get one of mine to gain weight. He loses all the time. We do use pediasure. We try not to use it if we don't have to but he usually gets about 3-4 a day. We offer him food and if we are not happy with what he ate (or if he isn't eating) we give the pediasure. They do make Nutripals which has some fat in it too. That might help too?
Also, my son loves shredded parm cheese. I have found I can put it on anything and it adds fat AND he will eat it. The cheeses are a great way to add fat.

In addition to the suggestions you've already gotten, cook vegetables in olive oil or butter. Offer regular olives as snacks. Add a little formula powder to smoothies. Slather everything in cream cheese.

Avocados are great too! And mine LOVE smoothies! I think it's pretty normal for thier growth to slow/change at that age b/c they are getting so much more active. Elizabeth was down to the 5% last visit and I don't think she'll be moving up anytime soon. She is a skinny minnie, but eats everything you put in front of her!

Ours dropped at 15 month appt too. Addison is was only 19 lbs 7 oz and she dropped from 15% to 5%.

Ped recommended pediasure but that made her throw up everytime!

I'm just trying to get her to eat lots of cheese, peanut butter etc.

I'm with you, I'm not goign to fill her up on crap just to fatten her up!

We were actually told by our Pediatric GI not to give Pediasure. She said that it causes some kids to throw up and for others, causes them not to be hungry at other times. Apparently it has some sort of oil in it that fills kids up for much longer than you would expect and they can end up eating less than before.

Baylinn lost a few ounces when we went for their 12 month weight check. I weaned them off their formula and bottles a few weeks early, so I kind of feel bad about that. I probably should've waited until after seeing the doctor. However, Breena who eats about the same amount and the same thing as Baylinn, weighs almost 7 lbs more!

My pedi also recommended Pedisure but Baylinn hates it and won't drink it. I put half Pedisure and half whole milk in her sippy at breakfast this morning....and then she threw up her breakfast in the carseat on the way to walmart.

I am glad to see I'm not the only one that has a skinny minny.
