My boys are 14 months and they still do not say anything at all. Anyone else? I know you should not compare, but anthony was (is) a big talker and had lots of words before his 1st birthday. So this is just wierd to me. They don't say "mama" or "dada" or anything. They seem very bright and can point to objects and people when we say the name. They seem to understand us when we ask questions or give instructions. So I dont really think there is any sort of delay in them...just wondering if this falls withen "normal" stuff....

My boys are just a couple weeks older and nothing either. We think one of them may say "bye-bye" but nothing on a regular basis. I'm trying not to get too worried about it. Gage didn't really start talking alot until closer to 18 months now he doesn't stop! Good luck with your guys!

I can't remember if mine said anything at 14 months, maybe cat and bye, not much. I wouldn't worry about it yet, just keep talking to them and reinforcing things like when they go "eh eh" and point to their cup, say "Oh you want your cup? Here is your cup" things like that. We had the real language explosion around 18 months.

Nothing until 22 months. And I mean nothing.
They are now 3.5. One had caught up. The other is still slightly delayed but can be understood by adults.

As I recall your boys are really physical right? I ask because it has been my experience that children tend to develop one area at a time. I'm sure the vocabulary will come, they just happen to have been focusing on the gross motor stuff. Soon enough you won't be able to get them to stop talking! Enjoy the silence ;)

Of course if you are truly worried you can always ask for an eval.

Ditto to the last post. I'm an SLP and my kids barely say 2 words at 15 mo.... Talk about an ego deflate, but I'm not at all worried. Doc and I agree that we'd like 6 words by 18 mo. Just be sure you're exposing them to as much opportunity to learn language as possible, modeling simple grammar but with normal intonation. Babytalk with them is no longer a good thing at this age. And when they point to something you name, reinforce them like crazy an expand on the thing you said to give more info (e.g. Where's the bunny?... Yes, that's a pretty pink bunny! Great!). Give it a little more time.

At our 15 month appointment, the pedi seemed totally shocked when I told him Lily had 20 words, Grace had 25. He expected 3, especially with twins. My girls are just little chit chatters. :) I'm sure they are just fine.

Mine just got their few words in the last month. No mama, dada.. but we have Hi, cheese, cookie, yes, bye,... and copying new ones all the time.

Hang in there.. it will explode soon enough....

    I agree with this completely.

Leighanna is very active and was the first to do everything, except talking. Liberty was slower at all the physical things and started talking at 9 or 10 months. I asked my MIL about it (she is a PT for Early On) and she said that she wouldn't worry about until after they were older then 2 yrs of age. HTH

Thanks everyone! I knew that I was probably worried for nothing.

My boys are 16 months and also do not talk. Actually they talk all the time, but nothing understandable. However, since so much data proves that twin boys are often delayed in their speech, we have them on the waiting list for a speech therapist, just in case.... Hopefully they will explode with words in the near future, but if not, we will work through it.

my boys are also extremely advanced with their gross and fine motor skills, so the comment about developing at different rates seems to apply to us and makes lots of sense!!

Have you tried baby sign language? We try to use it as often as we can throughout the day. Our DD is the more "talkative" one and doesn't sign too much while our DS is the opposite. I would definitely say you can count their other modes of communication even if they are not speaking yet. Plus we were told that girls tend to progress faster verbally than boys. HTH!

Mine didn't say a word until 18 months (OK, I take that back, they said "kitty" forever, but that was it), and then they seriously did explode. Now they never STFU. :)

That's totally normal. My peds and my sister's peds always said as long as they had 10 words by age 2 then you are fine. I've found with all my kids that somewhere between 15 and 18 months they started taking of in vocab. My niece made my sister nervous...she probably had maybe 11 words by age 2! LOL! but she took off between 2 and 2.5... just a late bloomer.

DD JUST started saying "ba" last Saturday (14 months). Before that, all we got were vowel sounds from her. DS has been babbling for months now. I think DD just wanted to take her sweet time.

Mine didn't really say anything at 14 months either. I guess they did have a few words ("dee" for "kitty", "all done," "bye-bye"), but it didn't seem like much. I refused to let myself worry until at least 15 months. Amy had a language explosion right then, and by 18 months was jabbering nonstop. Sarah still (at 20 months) hasn't really had the explosion, but I can see very gradual progress.
