12w ultrasound, what to expect?

Hello everyone!

Well, I have my 12 week ultrasound on Monday (technically, I'll be 11w6d.) Can anyone give me any idea what to expect? I know with a singleton, they do the nuchal translucency measurement and some bloodwork, but I thought I read somewhere that those tests aren't as accurate with twins. Is this correct? Any particular questions I should ask? Will this be a fairly long ultrasound? My other two were pretty quick - find the babies, find the heartbeats, check the ovary cysts. I imagine they will be looking more closely this time!

Have you had an u/s yet. My 12 week u/s was my second. They had to redo some of the measurements, so from what I remember, at my 12 week ultrasound they checked the fluid, they did do some measurements, checked to find a membrane. I think one of the big things here is to find out what type of twins you have (Identical, fraternal, di-di, mono-di, etc.)

 

I've had two ultrasounds, one at 7w6d and one at 8w2d. The babies are in their own sacs I guess - she said there was a thick membrane between them.

 

I don't think it will be much different than with your singleton, just longer because there are two babies. The nuchal testing is the same (I have also heard it is not as accurate with twins, but the testing itself will be the same... finger stick, measure thickness of back of neck), they'll do general measurements, check for presence of all important structures, and probably measure fluid, although not always. With my boys, my 16w u/s was the long one. With this baby I expect my 18w u/s to be more involved than the few I've had to date. Good luck.
