    Hi,

I have not yet introduced myself on the 1-5 board, I am Rebecca and I have b/g twins Bella and Gabriel who recently turned 1 yr old. My twins were born at 28 weeks so developmentally we are still about 9 months.

My question is do your 9month - 1year olds take two naps or one? Mine have always taken 1 afternoon nap but do somtimes take a cat nap in the morning while we are out running errrands. With winter approaching, the thought of being in the house all day with them terrifies me! Maybe I should be putting them down for a nap in the morning instead of just leaving the house when they get fussy.

    Thanks,
    Rebecca

My girls have always been on 2 naps. They go down anywhere between 9 and 10:30 in the morning (depends on when they wake and when they get fussy) and then they nap again about 3 hours after they wake up. They are also getting between 11 and 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night.

I did a little research, completly unscientific of course :) and it seems like most kids drop down to one nap between 15 and 19 months.

I LOVE that they take two naps and I am a little sad to go down to just one. Total they are napping between 3-4 hours so it is great time for me to relax! I don't know what I will do with them all day if they only nap once!!

Hi Rebecca! Welcome to 1-5. My twins took 2 naps until they were 17 months old. They would nap from 9:30-11:30 and 1:30-3:10 (I had to wake them to get their big sister from school). I got them down to one nap at 17 months because they needed to be down to one when school started up again. Now they nap from 12:15-3:15.

    Hi Rebecca!

We are now down to one nap, as of 14 months. There are occasions where I will put them down for two, but usually only if I know they will be up late.

Welcome! We are on a strange schedule because I work part time, and they go to daycare part time. At home, they still take 2 naps (one morning, one after lunch). At daycare, where they don't sleep as well b/c they don't want to miss anything, they are down to one.

ETA - they sleep almost 11 hours straight most nights, in case that helps.

My twins were around 9-10 months when they dropped to one nap. I put them down at 11:00 a.m. every day and usually sleep till 2 or so.

Mine are 16 mos right now (no adjusted age), but they've been taking 2 naps since they were about 10 mos old. They usually wake up around 7am, and then take a morning nap from 10-12:00. Then another nap around 3:00, but that one's usually only about 45 min unless they're super tired.

I'd say, just watch them for signs of being tired. Usually when mine get tired, they get super cranky or just slow down. I asked my pedi once, and he told me to not expect them to go down to 1 nap a day till about 2 yrs old.....but I see a lot of kids who do it earlier.

    Welcome to 1-5! :)

Mine took two naps until 16 months. (Actually, they switched to one nap at daycare at 13 months, but they still really needed two.) They slept at night from 7pm-6am (still do), and we would usually do the morning nap in the stroller from about 8-9 -- the weather here allows for year-round strollering most of the time -- and the midday nap in their cribs from about 12:30-2. If the weather was really bad, they were OK about taking both naps in their cribs.

Doing the nap in the stroller was really nice, though, because they could sleep just as much as they needed to. If they were really tired, they'd conk out, but when they got a little older, they'd just doze a bit or not sleep at all. When they stopped sleeping in the stroller at all, that's how I knew they were ready to go to one nap.

I was a bit sad to lose the morning nap too, but their afternoon nap has stretched out from 1.5 hours to 2 or sometimes even 3 hours! Also, it is really nice to be able to go on outings that last all morning.

:hi: Welcome!! Mine were taking 2/3 naps at that stage. I think we went down to one nap about 15 months.

    Hi Rebecca,

I haven't "graduated" on to this board yet but this is a topic of great interest to me. As of 3 weeks ago one of my girls has stopped taking 2 naps. It's extremely frustrating for me because my other daughter would be very happy having 2 naps. I've been having a lot of trouble trying to figure out what to do, because if I let one have 2 naps and the other only takes one, I end up spending most of the day at home trying to protect naps. Which means I can't get out of my house - misery!

Anyway, I'm on the verge of just forcing one nap (around 11AM) and hoping for the best. My concern is that they are just too young since most babies don't transition to 2 naps until 14-18+ months from my research. But... what can I do if one just WILL NOT sleep? I find myself losing my confidence which is terrible, but not knowing what to do seems worse than doing the wrong thing!

Anyway... it seems like we're on a 1 nap schedule now. Our days are from 6:30AM-6:30PM (they do sleep 12 hours thankfully) and nap around 11AM until 2PM ideally.

    Hi there:

My boys are just reaching 18 mos. and they are on a similiar schedule as Hillybean described. We are lucky, they love to sleep. I am always looking for signs that they have outgrown one of their naps, but it hasn't happened yet.

For my sanity, I have always stuck to a routine. We don't mince words when it's time for bedtime - we put them down, hug & kiss, and shut the door. Always together, on the same schedule, and always in separate cribs, since day one. If one of them doesn't want to go right to sleep, he'll usually play with his crib toys or look at a book until he does fall asleep.

    Wake up 8AM

1st nap @ 10:30, maybe for 1.5 hours or so
2nd nap @ 3PM, maybe for an hour

    Bedtime 8:30PM
