1 twin not moving as much as the other?

    Hi ladies,

I have a GC that is 29 weeks pregnant with my twins. She tells me that our little boy doesn't move near as much as our little girl. My GC doesn't seem worried at all, but of course I am. Should I be concerned? Can this be normal? Sorry if I'm sounding a bit neurotic here. Her first NST isn't until 32 weeks. She also won't be seen by either doctor until then. I'm thinking about asking her to go for an ultrasound next week to make sure everything is ok. What do you all think?

Babies are all different. It could be that he is just a very mellow baby! It could be the position or it could be that she doesn't THINK he moves as much, but it is all perception. It may be that the placenta is blocking some movement. It is hard to sit back and watch someone else carry your babies (I imagine). I assume she is having regular ultrasounds.

My two are very different as far as when/where I feel them. Baby A is much lower and I feel her ALL THE TIME. Baby B is much higher, but I hardly ever feel her. When I lie on my back for my NSTs, she gets more active. Get her to try different positions and drink some OJ or eat a piece of chocolate. Also, it wasn't until about the last 2 weeks that I can TRULY tell the difference between the two. A lot of times, you feel movement, but are not real sure on who it is.

I wouldn't worry too much, but it is always better to be safe. A lot of high risk offices teach u/s at night and need patients to volunteer to get scanned as well as vocational type schools (JR colleges or Virginia Tech type institutes). They might be able to get her a scan for free and quickly to give some reassurance.

Im 29 weeks myself and i can tell you that sometimes one moves more than the other I told my dr that and he said that its not that the baby isn't moving its just there isn't much room in there anymore ... Bit if it would be your mind to ease i would tell you to get her in for a ultra sound !

    Thanks ladies,
Yes it has been very hard for me to have someone else carry my babies. Much more so than I ever thought! I'm so grateful to her for doing this though for us. The baby girl that moves more is on the bottom, the baby boy is much higher up. Maybe that is what is causing it. I will have to look into getting an ultrasound done to ease my mind. I do feel better after reading your responses. Thank you for that!

I can go a couple of days and hardly feel either of them, I can go sometime and only feel one, then a few days of the other. They can have different sleeping times, the postition they are in can effect it. Also, my placenta covers baby b a little and that can also make it a bit harder to feel him. Plus, with the babies moving and changing postitions, one can never be 100% certain of who is really moving or not. I wouldn't worry to much, but saying, to be honest, I have my moments were I wish I could just know and not worry about who is moving and if they are both ok.

Try to relax, but i think it is totally normal that you might freak out just a bit. We are moms (and dads), it's what we do.

I'm almost 27 weeks, so a little behind her but my Baby A's movement isn't as strong as Baby B and he makes me worry all time!! But then he starts going. It took me a while to learn his movements, but before I did, I called the doctor often. I feel your pain. Good luck!

I agree that it is really hard to tell who is who at times. . My DS moved more than DD, or at least I felt him more.. I dont know if him being bigger just caused me to be able to feel him moving more or if he was just more active. Have they dont any measurements for you to know which baby is bigger?

Also, if she feels the one on the bottom more, it may be because she feels more pressure lower in her stomach so it is easier to feel movement there as well. And if one is on top of the other - the one on bottom may be cramped and baby on top is not so much, so when the baby on top moves its not as noticable..

Sorry if i rambled . I think it is a natural part of having twins.....but can also mean complications so its not something you can really be at ease about without fully knowing..

My Baby B is way more active than Baby A. He is higher up and very active. She is lower and her movements aren't as noticable to me. Do you know where the placentas are located? Because our Baby A's placenta is on the front of my uterus and that makes it harder for me to feel her movements, but I do feel her.

Oh, I love hearing that I'm not the only one with this worry. I really do feel SO much better after reading all of these posts. Unfortunately I do not know where the placenta is. My GC lives across the country so unfortunately I have gone to none of her ultrasounds. I guess this is much more common than I knew. Thanks!!!

Add me to the uneven movements list! My little boy is on the bottom and moves almost constantly (as he kicks me right now in my bladder!), and my little girl is on top and doesn't move near as much.

I'm guessing that he's more squished down there so he moves more, literally his sister is sitting on top of him! And when I lay down at night on my right side he moves more (he's kinda in the bottom right corner across the bottom and she's in the top left corner across the top....if that makes sense), but if I lay on my left side he doesn't wiggle as much.

I agree it's frustrating, but anytime they aren't moving much I find a big old cold glass of orange juice gets them both moving! :D

Most of my pregnancy I've felt Baby A a lot more than baby B, but I've been told--here on this board when I asked a similar question, and by OBs and ultrasound techs--that it's normal. And when we see them on u/s, they're normally both very active. Ditto the pp's; there can be a variety of reasons why you feel one more than the other, due to positioning of the babies, the placentas, differences in temperament, etc.

It also depends on where the placenta is placed. I had one placenta at the front which cushions alot of movement. My one twin was just a sleeper and packed on the weight while the other one was always moving to be near her sleeping sister. It was amazing to see them interact when they came out because the one who was ALWAYS moving to be with her sister would cry if she was near her sometimes !!! hehe Plus the active one became my best sleeper and most relaxed baby. While my sleeping baby (in utero) was the most active when she came out -- if she wasn't sleeping she was crying. I always noticed my in utero sleeper would always move into a comfy position when I was turning in bed. There are so many things to worry about but try not to if you can and just enjoy them.

I am 32 weeks today, and I was terrified of this too, until I asked these ladies. They *know* what they're talking about! Caroline moves so much more than Wendy, and it used to scare me so bad, and these guys made me feel so much better about it. Now the DH and I just joke that Caroline will be the troublemaker like George was, and Miss Gwendy Wendy will be easy like Owen was! :D

    Congrats on your babies!

I have always felt baby A more than baby B. If I want to make sure all is well with A, usually I eat something sweet, and lay down on my left side. Then I usually feel a whole bunch of movement from B.
I am almost 35 weeks and both babies are really active on u/s but I still feel A more than B. A is breech and B is vertex, I don't know if that makes a difference also.

Wow, to have to "trust" someone else as deeply as you are right now and to include her in the most intamite part of your life is amazing, but to also have her across the country.... Im sure to not be there must be very hard.

Well, I must say that I am SO SO happy that I asked this question. I never thought it was actually fairly normal, but it makes sense as they are in different postions, have different personalities, and have different positioned placentas. On a scale from one to ten of being scared, I went from a 7 down to a 1! Thank God!! This has been such an adventure for me to have someone else carry my babies. My GC told me today about 5-6 people at Target asked her if she was overdue! I had to laugh at that as she is only 29 weeks! I'm sure you ladies hear that all of the time.

Oh yeah. At 28 weeks, I got the comment, "Any minute now?" Um, no...I'm only 28 weeks pregnant, but there's two in there. Now I'm on hospital bed rest and my DH takes me for a wheelchair excursion every night. We always go by the newborn nursery to look at the babies in the window (and make up commentary from the little ones...I know, we're weird). Without fail now, I get asked which one is mine. Um, hello...I'm nearly 33 weeks pregnant with twins. If I looked like this AFTER DELIVERY, I would be in tears. People just don't know what to say sometimes!

Good luck with your cross-country pregnancy. I know that has to be a trying experience. It's difficult enough for those of us who can look down and see our big bellies every day. Can't wait to hear about your little twinkies when they arrive!

twinsinFL-Oh no, you're not weird at all. My husband and I make up all kinds of commentary coming from our dog. We also do for my sister's babies. We have voices and everything. Kind of disturbing, but we love it!

My two had very different levels of activity as well. Baby A was head down and low and I usually only felt her when she had the hiccups. Baby B was breech and high and she was moving ALL the time. As long as there is some activity for both babies, they should be fine.

I can only imagine how difficult it is to have someone else carrying your babies since it makes it so difficult to know about their well-being. If I were you, I would ask her to go in for an u/s next week just to ease your mind.

I hardly felt my dd move at all the whole pregnancy. I felt ds all the time. I think it was inpart due to position which is very common with twins and in part due to personality. DD is the sweetiest little girl who is very mellow. she loves to just sit and color, sit in my lap adn snuggle, just hang out. My ds hardly ever sits. HE runs ar uond and is a virtual whirlwind.

As long as the doc is not concerned, I wouldn't be.

I was feeling movement only in one spot and was concerned about it as well. At my u/s last week I found out that baby A my girl was vertex (head down) and baby b, my boy, was transverse with his feet meeting up with her feet. So, basically they were kicking each other. That is why I felt all the big kicks in the same spot and rarely I felt a little something down lower (her hands maybe?). I decided at that point not to worry.

The exact same thing happened to me. My DD didnt move that much but DS was kicking and moving all the time. I used to be worried but it turned out that she was just a calm baby. I have to say that both are the same way now: DS is very active (like he has ants in his pants!) but DD is calm and quiet!

If your Doctor is happy, then that´s ok. I know how worrying it is. GL and congrats on your twins! :D

Ali M-I'm considering asking her to go in next week to get an ultrasound. It's a hard call for me because I don't want to come across as this overly worried crazy person out here in CA. We will see. She told me Tuesday night that both of them were moving around a lot. If I were the one pregnant I would definitley go in for peace of mind! I don't know, we are paying her A LOT, so I guess I should just go ahead and ask....

I'll all for whatever eases your mind. Pregnancy is hard enough already without everything you have added to it. At this point, if she went to L&D, they'd probably just do fetal heart monitoring to make sure both babies were reactive. If you want her to have an u/s, I'd check into the local u/s schools and see if they need any volunteers to get scanned.

    Good luck!
