Formula switching

Both the girls are on Neosure, they have been since birth. Right now they are between 10 and 11 pounds. At their 2 month appointment the Dr. said we could switch them off Neosure to regular formula IF we wanted too. At the time they were 7-8 pounds and we choose not to. Now that they have gained some more weight and they have gotten bigger I'm debating on putting them on Similac Advance. I'm hesitant because with the Neosure they are getting the extra calories. My wallet could definately benefit with a cheaper formula but I don't want to base my decision on that.
What would you do? Would you go ahead and switch or wait until they are a little bigger before you do??

I think if the pediatrician said you could then I would go for it. My guys were both on Neosure when they came home from the hospital and as soon as the pediatrician said so we jumped on the chance to get them onto Similac Advance. It is much cheaper and our guys had no difficulty with the change. If you are comfortable with it, then I would say go for it!

 

My daughters were always good weights but we kept them on the Neosure for 9 months, per the doctor's orders. Had she said we could take them off sooner, I gladly would have!

 

I have heard of mixing regular formula differently to make it have more calories, have you thought of going that route, or asked your ped if that would be ok?

 

We switched our babies off Neosure at about 3 1/2 months. They had a hard time with off brand formulas and kept spitting up a lot. So I put them back on Neosure and slowly started mixing in Similac Advance. They are now just on Similac Advance and are having no problems. They seem to like it and it has helped the wallet.

I think the reason they didn't like the off brands was because it tasted so different from the Neosure. The Similac Advanced must taste pretty similar b/c they don't refuse it. I buy mine at Costco and it has saved us a lot of money.

 

If you still want them to have the extra calories you can fortify regular formula. Once I stopped pumping we tried just neosure and they didnt do well. Ped said we could play around with the formulas until we found something that worked for them as long as we kept fortifying. We ended up with Similac Lactose free and fortified it with Neosure, apparently straight formula with lactose was just too much for their tummies. Anyways, worked great for my girls, we stopped around 6 months old.

 

Mine were on Enfamil Enfacare, the preemie enfamil formula, and we kept them on it until we switched to whole milk at 12 months. I would double check with your dr. before taking them off.

 

when mine were in the hospital they got us Similac Special Care formula (24 cal) and it is NOT available to purchase - not even by special order or prescription- but they gave us a sheet that told us how to mix regular formula stronger to make it 24 cal - it was something like 4 scoops of formula to 6 oz of water (instead of the regular 3)....

if you'd like me to find it PM me - I believe it also had the calculations to make 22 cal formula (which is what Neosure is)

 

You can mix regular formula to extra calories, ask your pedi about it (or you can find the recipe online). I kept my girls on Neosure until 6 months, then I switched them to Costco/Kirkland brand formula mixed to 22 cal/ounce and 26 cal/ounce.

 

We switched ours to regular formula when the were 10 pounds and they have done really well. It is lots cheaper.

Our girls were taken off of Neosure at 1 1/2 months old. But it was at this point that we realized that they were lactose intolerant. <_< We didn't hesitate once the ped. told us to go ahead and take them off! Good luck
