This goes along with my post in the Health Issues forum. My son's caloric intake is low. So if you can remember, please tell me what your kids ate yesterday (not what you gave them, but what they actually ate!) Thanks!

A couple waffles and a banana each. A cup of milk each. No idea on lunch or snacks because they were at daycare. Two servings each of veggie pasta with tomato sauce, Parmesan, and cheddar cheese, a piece each of homemade garlic bread, and probably a cup of milk each.

Some days it's much less. Spaghetti is their favorite meal, so they tend to eat more of that and less on other nights. Breakfast is generally the same every day--couple waffles or French toast sticks, fruit, and milk. Occasionally add or sub a Nutrigrain bar.

I wanted to add, I try and do more whole foods and less processes stuff for my girls most of the time. One of my girls is 75% for height and under 5 for weight, when i'm worried she is not getting enough I make her 'special chocolate" milk which is just carnation instant breakfast. I would rather encourage healthy normal eating habits, than worry about getting calories in.

    Hmmm...
    All three kids roughly:
Bkfst: waffle and half a mini bagel each, half cup of milk
Lunch: went to Old Sturbridge Village so it was a picnic lunch-half pbj on wheat, cucumbers, chips(fritos/pirate booty/cheetos, all split), one juice box, half a cookie
Snack:stopped for small ice cream(no cone)
Dinner: glass of milk, chips, chicken sandwiches(half each on wheat toast with slice of bacon, pasta salad
Dessert: small slice of cheesecake with strawberries(dinner was at my parents).

Now-that's not typical. That's a lot of junk lol. But we weren't home for any meal but bkfst. And today will be no better as we are going to six flags. Lol!

Oh man yesterday was a bad day. Kids have been kinda sick and all. He ate the most and had cereal and milk for breakfast, McDonald's happy meal at lunch (I know, I know) and snack because he didn't finish it at lunch, chicken and veggies for dinner with some S'more goldfish for dessert.

PB & J on whole wheat bread, a couple of strawberries, handful of plain potato chips and a small bowl of yogurt covered raisins.
1/2 an apple, 1 slice of cheese

They eat about the same amounts.

Breakfast: 8oz whole milk, 2 pancakes with butter and syrup
Snack at school: not certain but its usually a few animal crackers or a handful of goldfish, water
    Lunch: 1/4 - 1/2 cup brown/white rice, 2-3 oz stirfried chicken, 1/4 apple, 4-5 pretzel chips, water
After school snack: 1/2 ham sandwich, large smoothie (1 apple, 1 banana, 6 strawberries, 1 cup milk, ice cubes, I usually also add 1/4 cup plain yogurt but we ran out. This was divided into 3 serves.), 2 gummi worms, water
Dinner: 2 flour tortillas, 1/4 cup refried beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, water

Yesterday we did lots of baking and no proper cooking, so not a typical day:

Breakfast - 1/2 cup of muesli, 1/2 cup of blueberries, 1/2 - 2/3 cup of 2% milk; DD had water, DS had 1 cup of milk
Picnic lunch - 1 small raisin roll, 2 zucchini cheese muffins, 1/2 cup of blueberries, water, 2 pieces of chocolate
Snack - 1 small raisin roll, watermelon, water
Supper - at least 1 cup of green beans with some sour cream, 1/2 cheese muffin, water

Thanks for all your responses. It helps to see I'm feeding them similar amounts as some of you. I think the main problem is he just picks at his dinner. I don't know what to do other then offer him the food. I can't force him to eat it. I will have to see what the rest of the test results show and what the nutritionist has to say.

    Here's what he had yesterday:
breakfast - scrambled eggs with cheese, 1/2 banana with peanut butter - he ate it all
Lunch - PB & J sandwich on wheat bread, pineapple, red peppers sticks and a couple spoonfuls of yogurt - he ate the sandwich a red pepper stick, some of the pineapple and most of the yogurt
Dinner - pizza, fresh veggies (cucumbers & tomatoes) - picked at it, maybe had a few bites and left the veggies
snack - small bowl of pretzels

I give them a small cup of milk with lunch and dinner. Sometimes he drinks it, sometimes he leaves it.

He didn't ask for snacks in between meals. I normally don't give snacks after dinner if they don't eat their dinner, but at this point I'm just going to have to give him something healthy before bed. I just hope that doesn't teach him he doesn't have to eat dinner and he'll still get something to eat. I was doing carnation for awhile. I'll have to get back to that too, maybe.

I was trying to follow the approach of just giving healthy options and when he's hungry he'll eat it, and not worry about it so much. He's growing (in height), he doesn't appear hungry or overfed, so we're doing ok. But now I'm worried. I guess I'll have to learn more about what that blood test really proves.

Pop tarts for breakfast, grapes and apples before lunch, sandwiches and salad for lunch, more fruit/crackers/goldfish for snack, corned beef, baked potato and peas for dinner, and popcorn during a movie last night before bed.

Timothy- He ends up eating more processed foods because he's pickier and has issues with dairy and nuts.
breakfast- homemade sausage biscuit made with coconut milk, a bowl of Kashi Cinnamon Harvest w/soy milk and apple juice
lunch- small cinnamon bagel, 4 small beef jerky sticks, carrot sticks, sunflower seeds, 2 dairy free choc. chip cookies, apple juice
snack- apple cinnamon rice snacks, Kashi strawberry bar, a few more cookies (possibly something else, I don't remember)
dinner- big pile of popcorn chicken and strawberries, choc soy milk
Timothy is a complete bean pole. I take in the waist on all his shorts. He's 4'6" and around 60 lbs. He plays soccer and moves a ton. Yesterday was also some of his favorite food.

Sarah- Almost as tall as Timothy, but a few pounds heavier. Still quite thin
breakfast- a bowl of vanilla chex in regular milk
lunch- chicken, cheese and broccoli soup (1 cup), a cup a mandarin oranges, an oatmeal square and 2 choc. chip cookies
    snack- a couple more cookies
dinner- popcorn chicken (small pile) and strawberries with choc. milk

It really depends on what we have on whether the girls eat well. A good breakfast that they eat up, which we had this morning, is banana muffins and a carnation smoothie that has a banana and some peanut butter blended together. They ate school lunch today which was chicken nuggets and cheesy potatoes ( they said they ate good, but who knows). They took a banana muffin and water for snack. They ate Alfredo pasta for supper and ate pretty well. Some days are better than others for us, but overall I try to focus more on how they have eaten over an entire week instead of day to day.

    DD1:

2 bowls of Cheerios & milk, small yogurt tube
    cheese stick
5 chicken nuggets (baked), handful of goldfish, dried fruit leather, a few ounces of juice
    water, applesauce pouch
1 piece of pizza (thin cheese), some apple, and a small cookie

    DD2

    1/2 a bowl of Cheerios & milk
    dried fruit leather & yogurt
Nutella & peanut butter on wheat (ate entire whole sandwich) , water
cheese stick, a few ounces of juice
very little pizza and some apple and a small cookie

DD1 is 20 th % weight and 60th for height. She eats well and loves meat & dairy. Lots of physical activity- gets hungry often.

DD2 hovers between 3 & 5th % weight and 30th for height. She is finicky and has a lot of diet restrictions due to medical issues. VERY physically active- rarely states she is hungry and eats depending on what is served.

We try to eat healthy- I wish they ate more vegetables, but they both eat a lot of fruit! We actively avoid dye and HFC in foods.

Both are small for grade, and look even more so because they are young for grade. (going into 3rd- 7 turning 8 in Oct).

We have talked to countless Drs for other things. DD2 sees a gastroenterologist and he has a nutritionist on staff. Neither is concerned because DD2's skin, hair, nails, and general demeanor is good. She has plenty of energy! They become concerned if a child seems lethargic, has food related behavioral concerns, or seems sickly.

I am a small, light framed person-- so genetically both DDs may end up on the smaller side physically.

Both of my kids are low percentile on weight (and height...DH and I are both hobbits...so our kids will be too). They are 4 months shy of 6 and have not cracked 40lbs yet.

    Sophia:
B-1/2 cup of lucky charms with a little milk with blueberries. About 6oz of milk with breakfast
L-a piece of wheat toast with butter and a dannon light and fit yogurt
D- pulled pork (around 2oz, I guess), wheels pasta with a little butter and parm cheese, and broccoli
Afternoon snack: cheese stick, fruit cup, raisins
Evening snack (after dinner): a slice of marble cake with some whipped cream on top

    Luke:
B-1/2 cup of lucky charms with a little milk and blueberries-same amount of milk to drink
L-I think he had toast too and an apple
D-a meatball (we had a hodge podge of leftovers yesterday) , wheels pasta (plain, nothing on it) and broccoli
Afternoon snack: fruit cup and about 15 almonds
Evening snack: a slice of marble cake

Breakfast: (they woke up about two hours apart, Royce had two breakfasts, Alice only had one)
Alice two eggs and four pieces of bacon
Royce bowl of cereal, one egg, toast

    Lunch:
    Alice 1/2 cup baked ziti
Royce whole piece of pepperoni pizza (1/6 of a large pizzeria pie) a few bites of Alice's ziti

    Snack:
    Both Granny Smith apple

    Dinner:
Both ate about a cup of homemade chili, cheezeits, sour cream, cheese, and a 3/4 cup of ice cream.

I cannot wait for summer to be over so we can all get back to our good eating habits. My babysitter doesn't make them eat fruits or vegetables, so I just give up for now. I have told them that once school starts back they will be eating better, I.e. more fruits and vegetables and less ice cream, cookies, pizza.

Anyway, I weighed them both yesterday after eating breakfasts, and they will be six next week, Alice weighed 42 pounds, and Royce weighed 38. For me being six foot tall, I have some small children.

    FWIW:

DDs will be 8 in Oct and are 44 & 53 lbs. No one is very worried because they are healthy- just small.

I worry that the obsession with kids weight (too light or too heavy) has really too much in focus in much of the USA. We need healthy kids--- not fixation on a lb or #. A child with a larger bone structure or a lighter bone structure than average is often poked and prodded to see what is 'wrong'...99% of the time is merely a matter of genetics.

A child can be in the top 10 % tile and the bottom 10 %tile and still be healthy. Some of the kids in those percentiles are not healthy and need to bulk up (often due to medical reasons) or slim down (often due to diet) but many are likely more/less muscular than their peers.

The best judge is a good Dr. They can look at BMI,body frame, genetics, and percent of muscle to fat and determine if changes need to be made.

Do I still worry both my DD are too small for their age-- you bet I do! But I try not too- since they eat (fairly) well and are active, healthy kids. :)

Yes!!! My sons are not obese but according to BMI they are overweight. Except, you can see their ribs and they are very short and muscular.

    I agree with this.

I also think that with people getting heavier, it's skewed our perception of "normal". Both of my kids look very thin and scrawny compared to a lot of their classmates. But then I go look at my old yearbooks or I saw an old commercial from the 70's and they would have fit right in. I try and just make sure they get mostly good food and are trying new foods and not too much junk. As long as they are active and not sick, I'm pretty happy.

At one point a dr. did suggest feeding therapy for Timothy because he was so thin. Then we told the dr. how much food Timothy can put down and he decided that Timothy was just being an active little boy. So it really is something for you and your dr. to figure out together.

Agree so much. I often see people fretting here whose kids are similar in size to mine, and no one is even remotely worried about mine. Obviously, there are times to worry, and your doctor will alert you. But generally I think that it's our job to put healthy food in front of kids and their job to eat. I try not to push mine to eat more. But obviously YMMV depending upon health issues and doctor recommendations.

I totally agree with this. My girls will be 7.5 next month, and at about 42 and 45 pounds, they are small (3rd and 10th percentiles). But if the pedi is not stressing over it, I'm not going to either. Heck, I am totally jealous that they got DH's side of the family's metabolism! My DH, at almost age 40, can choose to eat tuna for lunch for a week and drop over 10 pounds with just that one change...so jealous. ;)

This is true. In my 20's I could never buy cute shoes, because I had to have a wide width. Even in my early 30's, my wedding shoes had to be wide. I am not overweight, I am quite fit. But I just have wide feet. Nowadays, I can buy whatever shoe I want, and it doesn't have to be wide. So IMO, shoe sizes have changed to accommodate people getting heavier, because I really don't think my feet have shrank from my 20's. In fact, I am sure they have not, nothing about me has shrank since my 20's. ;)
