Anyone have any issues of smelly frozen breast milk? I had an oversupply of milk the first month the twins were born and built up a big freezer stash. I decided a month ago (when they were 3 mos) to start cycling it out and using it up and replacing with EBM. I am about 2/3 through cycling it out and my mom just noticed today it smells funny. I don't think I've ever smelled the thawed milk before. Hard to explain what it smells like but it just doesn't smell good. I thawed a 2nd bag and it smells too. The fresh milk in my fridge doesn't smell. I am worried I have been giving my twins this smelly milk all along!

I did some googling and it said it can be caused by an enzyme in my body lipase, and when the EBM is frozen the enzyme will cause it to smell, and I should scald milk before freezing it. I am wondering if I should give my kids the milk or throw away. I read some comments online where people gave it to their kids anyone.

It doesn't hurt the babies. Some people produce more lipase than others and the milk can stink, but if the babies are willing to drink it, then I wouldn't worry about it. If they start refusing it, then the solution is to scald it prior to freezing.

Yes! I also had an oversupply in the beginning and built up a freezer stash. I used some for a while with no issues. Then, a couple of months ago when I was starting LO on solids, I mixed some with rice cereal and noticed a funny odor. LO also had refused a few bottles of it a few times I was out and we thought he was just refusing being bottle-fed. I thawed some more bags as a test and they all smelled. I also tried to give him some more just to be sure and no-go! I smelled the fresh milk and it was fine (and he drank it). Honestly, I assumed that my freezer bags had expired or that I didn't freeze it quickly enough, so I ditched the whole stash! He would not have taken it anyway. It's very interesting to read the replies. I usually do my research. I had no idea-- just assumed it had spoiled.
