When do they lose the buddha belly?

Just out of curiosity, lol. It's hard to tell if they're overweight or not when they have that big belly.

I felt the same way with one of my girls. I was so afraid she was already fat by that age. I would say this past summer she totally lost it. BUT, I cut most of the "kid food" out of her diet starting at just over 4. We were catering the meals to her likes/dislikes mostly but I stopped that when the pedi told me her BMI is not a concern but needs to be watched. So I paid close attention to servings of fruits and veggies and encouraging more water between meals. I'm not sure if it's only what I did, or the combo of that and her age. She has started growing up more than out now.

My son doesn't have as much of buddha belly as my DD does at 4. We just went to their 4 year check up and she was 31.6 lbs and he was 30 lbs even. The pedi had him at 10% for both height and weight and her at 20% for both height and weight. She said they were perfectly proportioned...so I would not use the buddha belly as weight concern right yet (unless your pedi does say something). My DD has a build like DH and his sisters when they were children, very thin with a buddha belly.

I would say between 4-5, my dd (born 9-5-06), the exact same age as MichelleL's girls, doesn't have much of a buddha belly anymore, except when she goes thru her "growing out" growth spurt. When she's growing UP she's stick thin with a booty, but when she's growing out, she's got a small pooch in front. She's been around 50% for weight and 80-90% for height since birth.

Wow, my buddha belly girl and your DD are the twins! This sounds just like mine!

ITA agree with Nancy, definitely do not worry about it!! I re-read what I wrote, and I definitely do not want to give the impression that any child would have a weight issue at this age if they have a buddha belly.

Ok thanks... DD is very thin and has it, but I'm not worried about her weight, DS is a little more chubby on the arms so it's kinda hard to tell, although his belly is hard so I don't think there is much fat there either.

We'll see what happens this year!

I've wondered about that too, so it's good to read the replies here! Andrew doesn't have one, but Ivy does (especially after a meal and/or when there's big poop in the works), though she's otherwise slender. And they'll turn 5 in February. :faint:

DD lost her buddha belly this year. She will be 5 in February. She went through a growth spurt a few months ago and no more belly.

My girls are almost 5 (woah), and are now built more like kids and not like toddlers. One still has a cute little belly, but its going away. I look at pictures of my roly poly babies and get misty.

mine never really had the buddah belly (especially Ian - that kid practically has a 6 pack!) but I can tell when Abby is getting ready to grow - she eats like a pig for a week, gets a buddah belly and suddenly she wakes up one morning an inch taller!
