Bangs Remorse

I wavered back and forth for months about cutting my daughter's hair and giving her bangs. I love her hair, she can roll out of bed and it looks like I spent hours on it without even brushing it. It was the kind of hair with layers that sort of just fell into place. The problem was it was usually in her face. When we'd go out I'd clip it back or put it into a pony tail, but at home she'd always rip them out. And the shortest bang layers usually ended up slipping out of the pony tail, even with clips in to hold them back, but it still looked cute. I thought about getting bangs, and figured she'd look cute either way and I kind of always wondered what it would look like, and if it would be easier to keep out of her face. I figured it was better to see now then a few years from now when she'd have more of an opinion.

You know how you can't make up your mind, but as soon as it's done you have no idea why it was ever something you were considering in the first place? Like instantly you have your answer once it's too late? That's how I felt. Awful. I miss her long bangs. And it is NOT easier to maintain. She had curly hair when it grew in and now has sort of a wave to it. They don't stay straight, they are way too short (they like bounced up after they were cut), when she sleeps on them they're all uneven and sticking up the next day. My quick and easy go-to styles are no longer, because I can't just clip up the bangs into a pony tail like before, I have to try to get them to stay down. And then I plaster on a winter hat after anyway, so we're back to where we started when it comes off. It's been a week and I can't seem to get over it!

How long will it take them to grow out (to chin length)? Like a year? How long before I can at least clip them back in a clip? Maybe when they're like nose-length - maybe 4 months from now? Any ideas how to style them now to keep them under control? I've tried headbands, but her hair is so fine and slippery, they don't stay in.

I'll post some before and after pics when I have a minute later.

I am so so sorry~ I would guess it will take a few months for them to grow out long enough for them to be clipped back. The last time I got my hair cut she cut my side bangs in the wrong direction! It was a total mess and I wanted to slap her but they grew in pretty fast. I also know about not wanting to cut their hair! My 3 year old son has long curly hair and I cant being myself to cut it! I too him once about a month ago bc I was having a hard time controlling it and EVERYone always thinks hes a girl even though if they took the time to look at him they would see he is clearly a BOY but I left in tears and couldnt do it! Thankfully the next day I discovered axe hair gel and its AWESOME!!!! Ok im rambling... Sorry again.. My motto is when in doubt DONT DO IT!!! Hope they come in super fast for you!

Awww. You may be surprised how fast they grow. I don't think it will take a year. My girls don't have bangs, but I do. I got my bangs cut 6 weeks ago (I'm desperately in need of a hair cut, but can't get in until next week). When I pull my bangs down, they reach to the end of my nose. I'd say they've grown 1.5 inches in the past 6 weeks. Everyone is different, but I really do think they may grow faster than you expect. Hang in there.

I need to see some pictures, but I am sure she still looks adorable!

My daughter cut her own 'bangs' about a year ago, and they've grown back to chin length now, so yeah, about a year.
I use a flat iron to smooth them down and make them lay flat OR I would still twist them back in to a clip.

I hope I can describe this right. My Sarah grew out her bangs. I had a few styles that really worked for keeping them out of her face when they were growing. the downside is they take some time to do.

I would first keep Sarah's regular part. Her's is more to one side. Then I would run a second part across her head like a headband. I would get the bangs and some of the longer hair. Then I would do a tight, small french braid down each side starting at her regular part. Once I got good at getting the little braids tight enough, we could leave the braids in for 2 days. Sometimes I would braid it and then we would wear a headband over the braids.

I would also do the same parts and instead of braiding, do rolls down the side. I would roll the hair gathering in more in little bits, and about every inch use a tiny elastic to secure it.

This was when we first got home and i was mortified:

It's a little better now as the hair has "gotten used to it"

It often splits back to the original way it was growing it. Maybe I should keep it that way to train it for it to grow back out:

I think it looks fine! But yeah, honestly I give it 4 months before you can clip them back, if that... We have to get DD's bangs cut every 2 months.

I think she's adorable with bangs, but that's just me! You could always twist them, or do a braid to the side as they get a bit longer. She looks like she has super fine hair, it's so pretty!

I think she is adorable too but I can see how it would be a difference. I think in a few months they will be back to manageable.

Thanks for the kind compliments. I'm still learning how to style it. I gave them a bath tonight and put them in their Christmas outfits to get some pictures for our Christmas card. I was kind of happy with how her hair worked out. I think if I just try to side swipe them (even though they're really short), and keep them trained that way, it will be ok over the next few months.

eta: I did not want bangs on my girl. My mom did. I haven't been able to get rid of them.

I did the samething last dec and had all the feelings you mentioned,I did it and I HATED THEM..I wanted thin bands but she did thick ones that started in the middle of her head(omg I about passed out and my husband wanted to kill me) Its been a year now and they are to her chin but still a pain in the butt I either have to do pony tails on the top of her head, headbands or pig tails on the side of her head to keep the bangs back. I only did it with one daughter because hers was always in her face but that will never happen again.......When they were first cut and short I would use the really small rubberbands then use a barrett to hold it flat on her head so she didnt look like pebbles:) I dont know how to put pics on here or I would show you some, I guess you can look at my ticker but I really worked on them that day to have pictures done...I dont or didnt have time to do that daily!!! You just have to work with what you have the best you can  Good luck and your daughter is still adorable either way:)
