Hi! I'm new & terrified!

Hello there everyone! My name is Christina & I'm 7 weeks and 4 days pregnant. Thought I was having a single pregnancy but yesterday at my first ultrasound found out that not only am I having 2 babies, but there was no membrane separating them. I didn't really know what this meant until I did some research and found out that they are monoamniotic. I live about an hour outside DC/Baltimore MD and so I will be seeing a peri-natologist with Johns Hopkins. I honestly feel a lot of anxiety right now and have been through every emotion in the book since finding out. So I'm really hoping to meet some other moms going thru this, I understand there is more risk associated with this type of twin pregnancy.

By the way, here are my stats! I'll be 25 in March, I have 2 children already (girls age 4 1/2 and 7) Have been with my partner for about 2 years and he is not the father of my girls but is awesome and SO very supportive. He is 25. I'm currently not working, was working but decided to stay home and finish up my degree. He works full time nights, so lots of sleepless nights for me :/ lol. But anyway, I am looking forward to meeting you all :)

    Christina

First off, congratulations and welcome to twinstuff!! And secondly- a dx of mono/mono twins can be very difficult to make... that separating membrane can be next to impossible to find and sometimes isn't found until later in your pregnancy. Mo/mo twins are pretty rare so your chances of having that membrane is much higher than not. If they end up being mo/mo twins, there are women on here who have had successful pregnancies and deliveries- so you are in the right spot! :) They thought my boys were mo/mo twins but I had an u/s with a perinatoligist who was able to see the membrane. They didn't always find the membrane, either. It's a super thin whispy membrane- it's amazing that it held in place for so long! Congrats again and keep us posted.

I agree about the membrane, I though as much but couldnt remember exactly. I know with my boys they couldn't see a membrane early on either.

Jenn, your ticker for your boys is off, not sure if you noticed.

just to ease your mind a bit... my doctor sent me to a high-risk dr b/c of suspected momo twins, and they refused to attempt a mono-mono diagnosis until 17 weeks... my girls ended up being mono-di, but the membrane was very thin. it think it's WAAAAY to early for them to be sure of that.

Thanks Tamara! I hadn't noticed that but I usually visit twinstuff at work and they blocked those ticker websites a while ago (probably right before their 2nd birthday!) I'll have to update it when I get home later... My boys would be disappointed to know it said that they were "toddling their way to 2!"- they're VERY proud that they're 4!! :)

  6. Well I am relieved to hear that!! She looked for about a good 30 minutes, took 4D images, the whole 9. So if they do in fact find a thin membrane, is this still an indication of them being identical or will that change everything? Nice to meet you ladies!

if they are in the same gestational sac, they are identical. and if they are tentatively giving you a diagnosis of mo-mo twins, then yes, they are definitely ID. if they do find a membrane, it just means that they share a placenta, but are not in the same amniotic sac.

  8. Thank you so much! :)

Hi Christina and [IMG] to TS !

I had my ultrasound at 7 weeks to find out dates and found out about the twins then too. The u/s technician couldn't see a membrane, went to a specialist with more high tech equipment a month later and they found the very thin membrane. I was told that it is very hard to see in early pregnancy. I worried so much until I found out for sure that there was a membrane and I really shouldn't have.

I had mono-di (ID girls sharing a placenta) pregnancy which is high risk for twin to twin transfusion - meant that I had fortnightly u/s scans from 5 months on to check fluid levels. The best advice I got given was not to Google too much on the pregnancy - instead I quite often posted here my concerns, and the wonderful ladies would reply... so any questions, please ask..

Congrats and welcome. I saw the high risk/maternal fetal group and Hopkins and really liked them.

  14. Thank you for all the wonderful replies! :) Amy, I live in St. Mary's county, all the way down at the bottom of MD lol. Actually by Patuxent Naval Air Station.

And an update: I got a call from my regular OB today, they said they received my u/s reports this morning and the radiologist did diagnose MoMo twins but they are actually sending me to Annapolis now, to see Dr. Sweeney at the Annapolis Center for Maternal & Fetal Health. Checked them out and they seem well equipped to handle this either way it goes. I would be thrilled if they found a membrane hiding somewhere lol. I would be delivering at Arundel Mills Medical Center. Waiting on them to contact me to set up my first appointment!

I'm glad they're being proactive with your care but I think that the diagnosis of mo/mo twins is probably just something they have to give you in order to have you seen at the MFM. I think it's too early in your pregnancy for the "official" diagnosis of mo/mo twins. I was 7 weeks when my OB sent me to MFM and the diagnosis written on the order was mo/mo twins, even though it was really just something they were ruling out. It sounds like you and your babies are getting great care! Keep us posted!d :)

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Welcome to twinstuff, I hope you like it. I hope all goes well with your pregnancy.

  18. Thank you all! My regular OB called me this morning, they are being so proactive about this and it's been so comforting. The nurse at the office handled everything for me with seeing the MFM, she got me in tomorrow. The MFM wanted to see me right away. I've heard great things about him and they'll try again tomorrow to find a membrane and if not, hey I'll still have some pictures of the babies and know a little bit more about what's going to happen. I will update afterward :) I'm seeing Dr. Sweeney in Annapolis, he delivers at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

They could barely detect a membrane between my girls at 24 weeks. I hope they find the membrane soon.

The membrane between my boys wasn't found until 14 weeks. Just to reassure you that it can be very difficult to spot this early in pregnancy. Good luck and welcome!

Ditto what TabbiSue said! Be prepared for it to be sought after many more times! LOL Mine was seen at our 21wk u/s when we discovered our twins but it was glimpsed - and then it was gone. I don't think they even saw it at my 27wk u/s and then it was seen again for a brief second at my 35wk u/s.

Congrats on your twins! :) :) :) I hope you have a safe and LONG health pregnancy!
