Um, yeah, both of them are reading and sounding out words phonetically. There are words that they're spelling (easy ones, mommy, daddy, their names, animals). I started typing up a list of words in Word, and they read 90% of them. And then I asked them to type in words and both were able to spell whatever word they decided. And Royce knows the backspace key. There were too many "e"'s in "green" and he just went right up to the top right side of the keyboard and hit the backspace button. :smilie_xmas_116: Alice's handwriting is almost legible too.

And I can't take any credit for it because my husband is the one that reads to them every night.

At the same time, they're nuts! They've started acting terribly, extremely hyper, and not listening.

That is awesome about A & R reading and sounding words out. Isn't it fun to watch them learn right before your eyes?

Well of course they can do this - they have you as a Mommy, Bex! ;-) What clever children you have made! Brag away, I say!

btw years ago I read a book about children's natural biorhythyms... It said that when children are learning something new, they will often "act out" as there is so much going on for them... Makes sense, as they are natural sponges...

Do you remember the name of the book/article by any chance? I have a few hours of bus-riding time to kill a day, so I'm always looking for things to read. :)

And thank you all, I'm really amazed. Especially by the fact that it's not Alice that's better at it than Royce.

Your surprise at the ability of boys is what I am dealing with in school so remind me to shake it out of you the next time I see you. I realize you are basing it on personalities but since I am dealing with "Boys just don't read as well as girls and they are slower to mature", I am finding it my mission to make sure everyone understands that isn't true and it is personality based.

I agree with Rachel that they are going to be bored in K if you sent them to public school in our county. I think you are going to leave them in Private K. If so, good because then they will be challenged. I am finding with first that since the shock of Aaron being able to read/write above grade level has sunk in and his teacher understands he is bored (since he has now started to tell her) she is helping him find things to do to challenge him. It just took 2 months because of all of the assessments/etc that are required before they will believe your kid can do things.

BTW, if you want me to teach you word study, it's the Loudoun system for learning new words/spelling that they will do up to 3rd grade, I will be happy to scan/send you the rules and example words.

First, Bex that is totally AWESOME!!! And second, I couldn't agree more with with this. The reason my sis' ended up homeschooling in the beginning, was due to our county not being willing to do ANYTHING for my niece that was at a 3rd grade level in all subjects at 4 yrs old. They couldn't afford private school, so homeschooling it was.

And you should completely take credit!

Way to go A&R!!!! They are smarty pants! Seriously, you should be so proud!

Oh and yeah the keyboard skills, I am thinking all things electronic will be in all kids genetic make-up these days, my 3yo's can totally work my smart phone-like unlock it and find the apps they are looking for, its freaking crazy!!!

Firstly, Bex, that is awesome! & I agree with a pp who said, of course they can - you're a smart cookie!

To the bolded, I really don't want to homeschool, but this is my worry. My boys will remain unchallenged (just like DH & I BOTH were through most of school & def. elementary school) & I'll have to step up and do it.

    AWESOME!!! Isnt is fun? :)

I would get some easy readers at the library (free!) and have a go at them! My girls loved the WORD BIRD series (it is not brain numbing like BoB books). I only say get them at the library since once they crack the 'code' they are likely to fly through early readers quickly!

Fridge letter magnets are fun for spelling too!

YES! Often kiddos will make strides in one area and totally backfire in another (behaviors!). All the energy is directed at the new skill and self-control for managing other areas tanks. Hopefully it is temporary. I have noticed this in my kiddos AND in the preschool/school age kids.

YES! YES!! People do not give boys enough credit. My preschool kiddos of 12 were 9 boys and 3 girls. To be totally honest, two of the little boys were heads above the rest of the crowd in terms of academics and it was because their personalities. One was a quiet introspective little fellow and the other was a an active, but very focused boy.

Yes, stereotypically people think of boys as later maturing ( it is also true for some little girls and sometimes they get pushed ahead when not ready since they are 'girls'). BUT BUT a lot has to do with personality, interests, and drive of the child.

Also, some kiddos are stronger math/science areas and others reading/writing. People tend to blanket statement that early readers/writers are more academically inclined and or prone to boredom. NOT SO! Even though both your kiddos are starting to read, dont be surprised if one of them has simply stronger math based skills which can be less obvious than reading.

Yes, you may have to watch for boredom. My kiddos went from preschool to 1st (they just turned 6). I was hesitant due to their age (which the state we are in is fine, it is not technically a skip age-wise), but honestly we have been in a GREAT school that has challenged them in reading/writing...math is another story, but the year is young yet.LOL.

Some school differentiate better than others, look into it this spring for your plans next fall.

HS is our fallback plan. But surprisingly it is going well so far. There is a little group of 4 kiddos (across 3 classrooms of 1st grade) that do reading together , writing is differentiated for everyone, and we are looking in to math (the only part I think is not working right now because it is lock-step instruction and both my kiddos are restless with it).

Socially, yes they are young and one of my DDs is struggling with social/emotional dynamics. But that would be a concern if she was in any classroom (and was in preschool). We have had a good school social worker do some 'friend groups' for kids in K/1st that are finding the social component tough. As I said, we have a great school! Hope you can find one too!

My two are not where NINI H niece is though....that is a different realm altogether.

ENJOY! Is is so much fun to watch them read. :)

Irene, it's not the ability of boys, it's the ability of Royce. Alice has always been the more bookish of the two, Royce just hasn't shown the interest in words or numbers that Alice has. So when he was totally blowing her out of the water with reading and spelling last night, I was shocked because this is really the first time he's been ahead of her with anything academically. She's ahead of him physically too, so it's not a girls vs. boys thing, it's just the difference in their personalities. Alice is very focused, very intense, and Royce is just a laid back kind of guy.

I had the whole boredom in school thing going on. As did my husband. In fact, my husband didn't graduate high school because he was bored and slept through it. Instead, he got a diploma from the GED program (he didn't miss any on the GED test) and has some art and technical training. I found something that I was good at and was fun (music) and spent more than half of my time in music classes when I was in school. My mom taught at a private school, so I attended there from what is now pre-K to 3rd grade. I switched to public school in 4th grade and got in so much trouble because I was bored and unchallenged. Thankfully, the schools had just implemented a gifted program, so the following year I was a member of the first year of 5th graders.

I feel much better about the horrible behaviors lately, you girls all rock at putting that into perspective. I was wondering if I was losing my touch!

Wow that's great! My girls aren't quite there yet. We do read to them every night though and some of the stories they have memorized. Sometimes they will "read" the books to us almost word for word. But so far, no actual "real" reading :)

Oh no it was so long ago, (when Aliah was a bub) and I borrowed it from the library, it was an old book and from the UK I think... at the moment I'm reading Dr Weissbluth's Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Twins, a nice addition to his HSHHC - trying to devour it in between feeds and sleeps lol! If I find anything else though I will let you know..!
