I am pregnant with Baby #5 but it has almost been 10 years since we had our last kids. Do you use bumper pads in your crib(s) or do you think they are a suffocation risk? TIA!

I never used them. They really make it a pain to change the sheets. If I would have used one, I would have gotten one of the thin breathable bumpers that aren't a suffocation risk, but I chose just to go without them.

I took ours off. Due to being a PITA to change the sheets and the suffocation issue. Mine are almost a year and I am seriously considering ptting them back up because they move around so much at night and bash their heads into the bars. But I probably won't. I would be a nervous wreck the whole wondering if it will suffocate them :)

I used the bumpers with all 3 kids. When they were first born they weren't spending the nights in their cribs anyway. By the time they were in their cribs I wasn't worried about it.

I use the breathable bumpers and "ultimate crib sheets" that just snap into place. Regular sheets would indeed be a pain to change. Need the bumpers though, as DS moves a lot in his sleep and frequently runs into one side or another.

These sound FANtastic! They look a little pricey but man o man... I want about 12 of them.

To the OP- mine didn't really sleep in their cribs until 4 months. I didn't worry about the bumpers as mine were on VERY tight. I had to cut them off when the boys got too old for them.

I used them and still do. I am more concerned about my kids banging their heads on the bars than suffocation.

I used one in my ds's crib where they shared for 6 mo. and then used the breathable in my dd's crib after that for a while... but had to take it out anyway b/c they started stepping on them for a "leg up" to get out. they really advise against it now even more so than 3 yrs ago, I would probably just do without... if I had to do it over.

We used them. We tried going without them for a few nights when the twins were first in cribs (around 4 months) and both kids got arms & legs stuck in the slats.

I know they make breathable bumpers, but it didn't seem as comfy. Suffocation was just not one of my primary worries. Obviously I tried to make things safe, but I figured their risk of SIDS was as low as it could statistically be.

I also kept using them even after the kids started pulling up. They stood on them, yes, but never even tried to climb out of their cribs. The worst problem was that by standing on them, they'd push the bumpers down between the mattress and the slats, and then get mad because they banged their heads on the slats in their sleep.

Thank you all so much. I guess I will wait and see how things go. I plan on using a Pack n Play for the first few months and we will see where things go from there. Thanks again!

We used breathable bumpers and they were awesome! They were good paci catchers, they didn't have limbs stuck outside the cribs and they were pretty safe. When the boys were old enough to get a leg up on them we just took them off and no problems.

We use the breathable bumpers, but I just put a regular bumper on one side of DS1's crib. He kept pulling on the breathable bumper and the velcro would come undo and then he would cry. At this point, I'm not worried about the suffocation

I've never used them. It's summer all year round (lol) and I thought the bumper pads inhibit air circulation. There will be a time when they start getting their limbs stuck in the slats and it'll be very normal. I left it as it is and soon they figure out how to free themselves.

I used them for all 4 of my kids, thin breathable ones (not the mesh ones, just regular cheap bumper pads). I hated searching for lost paci's without them, as well as the bumped heads and stuck limbs ;)

We used them with all the kids. Getting arms/legs stuck in the slots is not fun.

I've only used the breathable type. You can buy them at Babies R Us for around $30 and they are safe to use.

I live in the Chicago area and the sale of crib bumpers was recently outlawed in Chicago because of too many infant deaths. I wouldn't use them if they weren't the breathable type. Too scary!!

I never used them. I've only had one stuck arm so far. I don't not use them due to suffocation risk necessarily- it just didn't seem necessary to me. I also never bought the fancy matching crib sets- I just got a bunch of cute, simple sheets since you have to change them all the time anyway.

I used them with dd1 and with the twins. I agree with pp that I was more concerned with bumped heads than suffication. Getting ready (as soon as I find the perfect fabric) to make new ones for their cribs. They have smooshed theirs down so I am making new ones. Willa Grace got her leg stuck between the slats a few weeks ago so the new ones will be taller.

We use the BreathableBaby bumpers too. I was too scared of SIDS. The boys are 8 months now and would definitely get their limbs stuck if it weren't for the bumpers. They don't seem to bump their heads.
