Do your 3 year olds do this?

For the last couple months they insist they are 'Kitty' and 'Puppy'. Jordyn is always Kitty and she will actually talk like this to me 'Meow, meow, meow, meow' with intonation in her voice and everything on a daily basis. I'm not concerned about it, just wondering how common this is. She will come up and lick you saying 'I'm a kitty' and request to be 'pet like a kitty'.

If I want her to do something I usually will have to ask 'Kitty' to do it and she will happily carry out said task.

Are my kids weird or is this a normal toddler thing???

Normal! I have a rule, only pretend licking. I HATE when they come up to me and lick my feet or legs. :bad:

Okay, so my kids aren't weird or anything. I had visions of them going to school on all fours and only speaking in 'Meows' :) :)

I might have to enforce the pretend licking rule though....ick.

Yep normal, my 4.5 yr old did that for a long time, and occassionally the twins will turn into "ruff ruff's" and crawl around panting and barking!

Yes, mine have done this off and off for the past year and a half. When someone asks Annelise what she's going to be when she grows up, her answer is either "a kitty" or "a monkey." I assume she'll figure out at some point that those professions aren't going to pay the bills.

that explains why mine lick me sometimes! duh! I never put it together... they'll say meow at other times, but then lick me! haha! fun times!

Well, it might pay the bills. All depends on the audience.

    Oh yeah, normal!

My dd is a "baby" right now and thankfully she's a "happy baby" because the sad baby that cries is a bit much for me

Mine pretend to be random people all the time! Just about every time I call their names I get a response of "I'm not Amelia, I'm Robin Hood". The popular names in this house that my children want to be called are Robin Hood, Maid Marion, Woody, Buzz, Peter Cottontail and Donna.

So being a dog or a cat seems like something mine would do. Today they are Maid Marion and Robin Hood and will not respond to anything else.

We have the same here too. One of them insists she is Henry the Octopus from the wiggles. They sometimes pretend to be dogs too and use their harnesses to lead eachother around.

Yup, my DD pretends to be a cat (either our cat Olivia or Isabella) and will answer you with a meow or ask a question in a meow form. She also pretends to be a monster and a dinosaur and if you ask her what she wants to be when she grows up, she wants to be a mouse. My DS will pretend to be a cat or a dinosaur but not as often as DD.

Yep, I have two little cats here too (Eleanor and Ethan). Sometimes they will be puppies or lions/tigers but cats are the most popular. My older twins used to do a lot of pretending as well (Naomi and Luke were never that into it) and they used to be characters from books/tv shows/films along with cats but E & E are sticking firmly with the animals for now. And you have to call them by the 'right' name!

 This is my rule too! I can't stand having my arms and face licked and watching them lick themselves/each other is no better. Now the rule is "If you're a pretend cat/dog, you have to pretend lick".

Yep, mine do this too. It's the worst in public when they decide that they are kitty or bear or puppy and will ONLY respond to that name. People think your crazy when you say loudly "Freeze Kitty....wait for mommy" or something similiar when in a store.

I concur-totally normal! Imaginative play! My son is either Spiderman/Batman/Ironman and my daughter is Hello Kitty/A Princess/a baby. They dress the part, act the part, talk the part...fun to watch! My friend's daughter who is 6 is often a horse when I see her, "galloping" on all fours and neighing, wants my kids to jump on her back.
