Weight differences at 28 weeks

Went for 28 week ultrasound today with mono/di twin girls and Baby A was 3 lbs even and Baby B was 2 lbs and 11 oz. Is 5 oz difference something to be concerned about? The dr. said it seemed normal as long as it isn't 20% difference. We are at about 10 %. The last ultrasound 2 weeks ago they measured 1 lb 14 oz and 1 lb 15 oz, only 1oz difference. The girls are certainly growing well, but I am concerned that they aren't closer weights and concerned about the shared placenta. I am also taking 3 protein shakes a day in addition to my regular meals.

We don't go back for another scan for two weeks.

Any info appreciated.

 

As your doctor said, as long as it's not up to 20% no need to worry.. My boys had a 10% discordance at 17 weeks and it kept getting larger, that's when you need to worry.. But for now I'd say you are good to go and in good hands!

 

THey are fine. My boys had a 15% discordance prety much from 24 weeks on. Baby A was a little over a pound heavier then his brother at birth.

Mine were di/di, (which I realize is a bit different) but were always a good 1/2 a pound different in weight. They were 5.7 and 6.2 at birth. Your doctor seems to be on top of it; when is your next scan?

 

Next scan is in 2 weeks.

 

Our boys fluctuated from the exact same weight to up to 5 ounces difference. I think that depending on their position, sometimes the USG is more or less accurate. Our mono/di boys developed TTTS, but even before that my hisgh risk ob has me getting USG every week from 24weeks on to look for size discordance/TTTS. It sounds like you are doing everything right, but I would advocate with your dr about your concerns for their size and ask for weekly USGs. Good luck!

 

I am having mono-di boys, and am only a couple weeks ahead of you - our boys have always been within 6oz of each other, and our doctor has never expressed concern. The last one, they were 2 ozs apart. You are doing great!

 

5 oz is nothing, especially since the ultrasound weights can be off by an ounce or two. Your babies might be closer in weight than you think. That's why most doctors don't worry until there's a 20% difference. And honestly, even if there is a decent weight difference, there might not be a problem. My daughters were born with a 28% weight difference, but both were totally healthy. Turns out that the cord for one of them implanted on the edge of the placenta and she was getting less blood. Now at 4 years old they're two pounds different but the same exact height (and both healthy).

 

Mine were always 5oz off - and at birth? they were 5oz different. To this day, they tend to be about 5oz different always.

30 week ultrasound today, Baby A was 3 lbs 1 oz, and Baby B was 3 lbs 7oz. So 6 oz different. Cervix looked good, and the Dr said that everything was fine and wasn't concerned about the 6 oz difference...

 

Remember that US's are often off, so the difference could be much less.

I don't remember the exact differences, but my girls were always quite a bit different in weight. When they were born, there was a significant difference, as Sabrina had stopped growing the last month (determined by an US the day before I was induced at almost 38 weeks). They were 7#9 and 5#3. Sabrina is still very small for her age... way below the charts, actually. But she doesn't have any significant health problems that we can find (other than a genetic condition making her legally blind, but that's totally unrelated to size), and is a charming and vivacious little thing.
