total sedation during c section

Hi everyone I'm new here and still trying to wrap my head around that I'm having twins. lol I have an 8 year old daughter and I had complications with the epidural and I was wondering if anyone knew if i could be under total sedation when I have my twins. I know I will be missing out on hearing their first cry, but the epidural was so bad it ruined the experience of my first one. If anyone can please answer this for me I would greatly appreciated. Thanks!

 

I imagine you could. With my twins and c section, they did a spinal block which I think may be a little different than an epidural??? Once my girls were delivered, they knocked me out completely.

My best friend was under complete sedation during her singleton's birth because the epidural and the spinal block didn't work.

What part of the epidural is causing your issues? Is it the injection of it? The medicine? I blacked out when they injected me with the medicine-twice. . .But the actual putting the catheter in wasn't a big deal to me, even though it took them 8 tries to get it in. If you have a reaction to the medicine, I think that could be an "adverse reaction" and they could either do a spinal block or complete sedation.

 

I didn't get an epidural with my twins and was told that if I had to have a c-section, they would have put me under general anesthesia for that. It's definitely possible.

 

They definitely can, that's what they said they would do to me if we ended up with an emergency c-section during the birth. I would ask about a spinal as well though, I found that to be a little less annoying than an epidural. Possibly because of when I had the spinal (I was in shock) whereas during the epidural I was having painful back labor. Most of all just share your concerns with them. I'm sure your medical team can come up with a solution that you will feel comfortable with.

 

well it took them 3 tries to get it in they scraped my backbone then once i was in the room to get the c section i guess it was wearing off cause i started to feel so much pain and pressure that i dont even remember hearing her cry anyway all i remember is the pain and if its going to be like that again id rather be asleep and not remember anything, plus i plan on getting my tubes tied while they are in there so i would be ok with being asleep through the whole thing and waking up to enjoy the babies not thinking about the pain.

 

The epidural didn't take for me and they didn't have time to experiment anymore, so I was under general anesthesia for my girls' births. If it is at all avoidable, I would find a way around it. I get pretty bummed sometimes thinking about how much I missed while under. Plus, coming out of the general I had some amnesia and I really don't remember much until several hours later. Talk to your doctor about your experience and start discussing a plan now- it goes much better if you've covered every eventuality in advance.

Oh I am so glad I'm not the only one to feel their c-section that way! I remember the slicing feeling, and yes it was terrible, way worse than the entire recovery. If I was to do it again, I would definitely ask to be put under, just in case the epidural didn't work again. I totally get your fear. I would talk to your OB or peri, whomever will be doing the delivery, and tell them that the last c-section you had, you felt the slicing. Hopefully that would open up (get it? I kill me!) the dialogue with your doctor to your options. Good luck!!

 

That's exactly what I had too. I had no problems with the spinal, but I've never had an epidural (and never been in labor) so I don't know how it might be different.

 

I had an epidural with my first c-section, then spinal blocks with the following two. I had no particular problem with the epidural, but the spinal was soooo much better. The epidural made me sleepy, cath in your back, etc. I had feeling back in my legs much more quickly with the spinal and was much more alert (totally awake vs. feeling like I had to fight the urge to sleep on the table with my epidural).

I had a spinal the first time which definitely took but OHMYGOSH on the spinal headache I got!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Horrid! If I have to have a c section again, I'm asking for epidural for sure! I would LOVE to be put out- for like 3 days- but I get SOO violently ill f/ anesthesia it probably wouldn't be worth it!

 

I had a friend who had this.

She did go on to have 3 more C-sections and it never happened again. She had a spinal with 2 and an epidural with 1. Perhaps a spinal would be better? I'd call the hospital's anesthesiologist team to see what they can do to work around your previous experience.

I had a beautiful spinal/epidural combo that was supposed to be the best of both worlds. It was fabulous. Beautiful. Highly recommend it and I had no side effects. Plus they mixed some painkillers in so I was feeling no pain until the next morning.

They could definitely knock you out but it's more dangerous and not ideal. Talk to your doctor. You had a bad experience, but maybe they could get it right next time?
